What's the difference between a 96 gt and a 98 gt. I've read that the 96gt had a wumoy 215hp and the 98gt had 225hp. What gives the 98 10 more hp? Can you mod to get that extra 10 the 98 has? Where does the 97 fit in?

It gets the extra 10HP through more aggressive computer tuning.

A '97 would be the same as a '96.

I wouldn't worry about it though, do a PI headswap, aftermarket plenum and TB and get a chip burned and you'll be good

According to Ford, the 98' gets the extra 10hp from a more aggressive ECC tune and the larger 2.5" catback.

HHmmmm.....I thought the 2005 GT was the first to have a 2.5" exhaust standard. Even the '03-'04 Cobra's came with 2 1/4" exhaust.

98's do have 2.5" exhaust tips where as 96/97s have 2.25" tips. No extra power there though. Tune is where the hp comes from.

I would have to agree, I just listed that as well as the tune, b/c that's what Ford claimed is the reason for the extra 10Hp in my 98' sales brochure that I saved.

There really isn't much of a difference, 96-98s usually do the same at the track. My 96 puts out less power out of a 4.6L than a freekin altima's v6 crapola
If you're shopping around, find a cheap 99+.

I would NEVER use a 3rd party book as a reference for any car. I've found too much misinformation in those books.

Plus (and correct me if I'm wrong) but didn't the '96 come with 2.73 gears (manual) or 3.08 (auto) with no upgrade available whereas the '98 had the option to upgrade to 3.27 gears (which is what mine came with). Then in '99 3.27 became standard.

Yeah, but that doesn't have any affect on flywheel horsepower.
