PI stands for power improved. Ford revised the 4.6L 2V engines in 1999. The 99-04 2V GT's have PI engines (or power improved engines). Basically, Ford improved the intake design, cam shafts, and cylinder heads to produce more power. This is why 99-04 GT's are rated @ 260HP while 96-98 GT's are rated @ 215-225HP.

You have an intake, cams, and heads from a 99-04 GT, giving you about +50HP or so. Its still a SOHC 2V.

a very quick way to tell is the oil filler neck will on the passenger side if they have done the swap, but as long as its a 2001 engine and the filler neck is on the passenger side, rest assure its a pi engine. the reason i say is that 99-01 ford used windsor to produce the 4.6 for the mustang. 96-98 was the npi romeo engine, 02-04 was the pi remeo engine, ive got a friend who got shafted on his 98 he bought with the "pi" motor; but the previous owner swapped the valve covers to simulate the pi swapped motor. the valve covers of the remeo vs the windsor are not intercangeable thus you should feel comfy knowing of the swap if its a true 01 pi motor. (p.s. no the windsor did not make hp then the romeo, or vise versa)

I'm a little confused with your analysis fast97gt. I just did the swap on my 98GT and got the swap kit from Parkway Performance. I used my original valve covers and my oil filler tube is on the drivers side. Not sure there are any easy ways to tell the difference with the exception that the intake manifold for the PI is deeper than the original.

Hes saying a PURE REAL pi engine has the oil sprout on the passenger side:

I believe thats all hes saying

yep thats what i was a sayin boss, i mean yes when you bought the kit from were ever 99.99% of the time it will be a romeo kit. which allows yuo to reuse your valve covers. very seldom you will receive a windsor setup, because there not as availeble as the romeo. yes i should have elaborated more with my reply. a pure pi motor will have the oil spout on the passenger side. i like when i pop my hood and stang enthusiast go "ooo ahhh" or "oh wow". the pi motor just more menicing in the 96-98 cars
