hello all,

i need some help planning my next mods:
working on my 98 cobra, open track car, ultimately heading towards american iron.
it will be driven to and from events (2-4 hrs one way), for at maybe 6-9 months, till i can get a tow set up.

already has the full maximum motorsports "maximum grip box" installed.

i need help deciding what to do to the rear.

since mine isn't a drag racer, and 340-370 rwhp would be the most it ever sees . . .

1) my guess is i probably dont need to worry about c-clip eliminators, or welding the axle tube?
(or do I?)

2) do i need to bother going to 31 spline axles? (my guess is yes, and probably may NEED to (depending on differential choice))

3) what differential?
torsen t2r? true track? detroit locker? other?
i don't really know the differences between any of these, so some education (or links to some education) would be great!!

3a) are these all LSD's?
is there a difference between posi traction, LSD? locker? other?
3b) which is best for road course duty? and would using it between home and the track be ok?

4) my thought is to go to 3.73's ???
i know. . . "it depends" on the tracks i'll be running (road atlanta, and VIR, eventually roebling road, and a ton at carolina motorsports park.

4a) i frequently read posts where everyone says gears are the BEST 1st mod, and I whole heartedly agree it NEEDS lower gearing,

4b) when everyone says go for 4.11's or even 4.30's, (even lower??) . . .
my guess this is more for drag racing, and LAUNCH-oriented goals, and less so for a road course application.
is this right?, or back to 4) "it depends"

5) any weight savings to be had here in the rear end/axles, etc?
i think i had read somewhere that there were lightweight ring and pinion sets to be had? it IS rotating weight, so it would seem to help acceleration if some could be pared off. any axle options that may be lighter-weight than others?
durability?

6) current stock rear end questions:
6a) the wheel/axle seems to have about 1/4" -1/2" play, meaning that you can push in, and pull out on the wheel, and the wheel/hub/axle slides that much.
6b) similarly, there seems to be maybe 1/4" - 1/2" rotational play, or slack, meaning i can turn the wheel that much before it seems to grab the diff.
6c) car seems to drive/handle well, no noise coming from rear end.
are these observations normal? or do they suggest a wheel bearing problem?

i know this was long,
sorry

thanks for the time and responses.
