hi everyone!

Very close to purchasing a triple black 98 vert with 44k.(this owner has had it for 4 years and only put 4-5k on it)This was garaged kept and shelved for winter but will be my daily driver. This is a list of the modifications done to the car.

K&N air filter, Pro-M mass air meter, Summit adjustable shift light,Fidanza aluminum flywheel with larger diamater Ford Racing clutch from the Terminator Cobra's,Steeda adjustable clutch quadrant and cable,TK Racing custom subframe connectors, 4.10 rear gears,Line locs on the front brakes, Russell braided stainless brake hoses front and rear,Cross drilled rotors front and rear,Better than stock brake pads front and rear ( I think I used Hawk if I remember correctly ),Pro 5.0 short throw shifter,Flomaster mufflers.

Okay now for my questions;

A.I'm extremely limited in my mechanic-ship, so I can't look at the car and see if anything is broken...but I drove it for a bit and it feels smooth, no drift, no pinging, idle is steady, no rust that I can see anywhere, no pings, dents, oil is clean(also looking inside looked clean as well) - Is there anything I should be looking for, or be worried about going in the near future? Again this will be my DD so I want to know ahead of time if the engine is gonna fall out next week!

B. What type of 1/4 would a average/good driver expect with that set up(if I was driving it would probably get lost:rlaugh:) I'm not planning on taking it to the track but I'd like to have an idea what's going on.

C. If you werebuy this car. What would be your next step if you were gonna modify it? Would getting a tune(perhaps one with the variable presets) be worth it? or maybe pullies?

thanks so much for any wisdom you can share!!!

That would be a sweet car. I wouldn't mod it at all. We have a 97 Cobra convertible that is bone stock and its perfect the way it is. Personally I would dump the KN for a factory air filter and dump the dronemasters for Magnaflow or some other straight through muffler. If it is going to be your daily driver, you'll be much happier in the long run if you don't mod it alot.

I had a 98 Cobra coupe. It had dumped Flowmasters when I bought it, but I eventually added KN FIPK CAI, after market X-pipe and Magnapacks. The OEM struts and shocks gave up ~50K so I replaced them with Bilsteins.

I also ended up putting my stock 03 Cobra wheels on it with 275's all the way around, it handled way better after that.

Very low 14's to mid 13's in the 1/4 depending on the driver and location of the track.

If I were to buy the car you are talking about and was satisfied with the existing exhaust and CAI my next mod would be gears (probably 3.73's). I wouldn't do under-drive pulleys. Tune maybe.

The FIPK is a waste of $$$. We had one for a short time on ours and the car never did run the same and got worse fuel economy.

I also had one on my F150 and that one was a complete POS. The quality was lousy and it did not even seal up at the throttle body at all.

If you want some good exhaust, get a straight through muffler like Magnaflow or Dynomax Ultraflo.

I kinda like the idea of the 03 Cobra wheels, but probably wouldn't switch ours.

If you want some good tires get some Micheline Pilot all seasons. Those are what we have on ours and they are fantastic and do really well in rain too.

They are just hot air intakes. There is no way they will pick up any horse power. Its just the placebo effect. The factory intake is actually getting cool outside air. Besides that I would not run oiled filters on any vehicle, especially one with a mass air sensor. Also they do not keep out dirt as well either. Most of the hot rodder diesel guys won't use them either. Another thing to note is that high end exotic cars do not come with air filters like that. I have a couple friends that are ASE mechanics and work a dealerships and they say not to use them. There are also TSBs about them from many car manufacturers. I would stick with stock Motorcraft filters, but if you really desire a so called high flow filter, get a dry flow AEM or AFE filter.

Yeah SN-95 Cobra's and 03 Cobra's get absolutely no benefit from FIPK's. Okay.

I know I didn't feel a noticeable difference in my 03 from the placebo effect around 5K-6K RPM...oh wait.

I get that you don't like them, but claiming they don't pick up any HP gains is :bs:. The OEM backward snorkle in the fender isn't the most efficient design, hence the gains from so many after market intakes. I've never fouled a MAF with a K&N even after re-oiling it.

Just because a company shows performance gains doesn't mean its true. They are trying to sell their product.

They don't get any benefit from it. It just sucks in hot air. If its better then why was our 97 Cobra consistantly getting 24-25 mpg on the highway before we intalled it and then after when installed barely got 20 or occasionally 22 mpg on the highway. After going back to stock mpg is back up.

If I ever do anything with a performance air filter again, it will be an AFE or AEM dry flow filter (no oiled filters) and it will be in the fender not in the hot engine bay next to the radiator.
