Hello everyone,
Back again everyone Can anyone tell us what this noise is we hear. From Boyfriend:
When the car is started I can feel a thump directly under the car near the gear shifter . I think that it may be the driveshaft. The car makes a high idling sound while the car is being driven. About a month ago I the car looked at the mechanic could determine what it was. Although, he did find a small tube like hose on the engine unconnected on the driver side. I went to another mechanic told me that I was losing anti-freeze around water pump and he would have to run a test to see where the leak was.

Does anyone know what this is? Thanks in Advance

I'm assuming this is an automatic... have you checked the tranny fluid?

Well, the noise at crank couldnt be the driveshaft since it is not moving. Also, the high rev sound could be the clutch slipping (a bad clutch could cause a knock noise also). Have you noticed and driveability problems other than noises? Bucking, stalling, running hot, weird smells, etc...?

weird smells at times, and what do you mean by bucking? its not the clutch we dont think it was changed back in 04

Bucking - While driving, at times the car would seem to jerk momentarily. Like when you are stepping on the gas and a plug or two quickly misfires hard, causing a sudden jerk.. like it wanted to stumble. This is what you would call "Bucking".

Does he hear the "Thump" as soon as he takes his foot off the clutch after starting? Then this "thump" might as well be the flywheel engaging the non-moving clutch assembly... causing a "THUMP" noise... which is normal. Even if the transmission is in neutral position, the tranny input shaft may still try to turn the driveshaft as the clutch is engaged. But not enough to make the wheels move. This is where the "thump" may come from.

Hard to diagnose these 'unknown' issues on a message board. What kind of smells, like electrical burning, oil burning, antifreeze,etc..? MustangLX-5.0 is right, when the clutch is released, you may hear or feel something, even in neutral. Any more details would really be helpful.
