98 mustang

Hi guys I have been looking at buying a used Mustang for a while now and came across a 98 GT with a paxton novi-2000 supercharger in it. the car has 92,000 miles on it very good cond inside and out other than the bumpers fading from the florida sun. is 6500 a good price for this and does the supercharger cause alot of engine damage. I never had a car with this set up and should it be preety noticible when driving and will it kill my gas mileage.

I would suggest taking it to your mechanic and having him look it over and compression test it. Buying a car with a s/c on it is USUALLY a sign of abuse. Those are lower miles for a 98 though. Your mpg will be ok if you don't get into boost every time you take off.

well ,19lb injectors are only good for about 300-310rwhp, and a novi 2000 is a pretty big blower, so it must be pullied for low boost, or running lean....

it depends on what your air/fuel ratio's are, im not sure what the fuel control unit does, but usually blower cars run like 36's or 42's

It will damage the engine if he actually is still running 19lb's and running at power level over 320rwhp or so. Then it's going to be lean no matter what. Lean means high amounts of heat in the cumbustion chamber and even detonation which beats up pistons and heads pretty hard-core.

look at the engine pic, it has orange top 19's, and ill bet it has well over 320rwhp.............

It does have an FMU although personally i'd ditch the FMU and 19's and stick some 42's in.

To the OP. Buying a supercharged car isn't going to be a turn the key and forget type of car. It will require more insight into tuning and keeping it operating properly. If you aren't familiar with tuning a supercharged car, i wouldn't buy it. From the looks of things, it appears to be a stock car with a blower slapped on. I don't even see any boost gauges or any other blower support equipment.

After reading this thread I am alittle scared of this car. It don't have any guages inside for the supercharger, I can get a decent deal for the car, would I be better to yank the supercharger off and go back to the stock setup?

There could be nothing wrong with it, but i would feel better changing a few things to make it "safe"

Larger fuel injectors, ditch the FMU, upgrade the fuel pump if it's not upgraded and at least install a boost gauge. Then get a custom dyno tune and tune if for a safe conservative setting.

Is there any other work done to the car other than the blower? I would make sure you do your research. I wouldn't want to buy someone else's headache.

I don't see a bypass valve either,check the blower pulley if it has a plastic cover in the middle,and a little metal tag,if it does you have the stock pulley,if not,with the milage of the car I will suggest to get the stock one,or get a bypass valve,and take it to get tuned asap,since it looks to me that they only install the blower on the stock engine,you can also call paxton and give them the blowers serial number,they will be able to tell you if the blower is still under warranty and if the ecu was sent to them to get tuned,

Hunter - don't be scared, be careful.

From all the solid info I ever saw, unless this car has other mods like full length headers/cams etc., the car will produce about 280rwhp with the stock heads.

As you approach the 300rwhp mark (when you are kicking it's ass), the 19lb injectors will get to 100% duty cycle. That means they are at full blast and cannot deliver any more fuel. The engine can then run lean and cause damage.

Since you may be around 280rwhp with no other power mods, this should not have been an issue. Have a good mechanic take the compression test as others have suggested.

Finally, if you buy it, you may want to upgrade to 24lb injectors and get a tune.

Overall...I would say take it out for a test run....not a track run, not a beat the heck out of it run...just a normal drive...if it is running good without any major problems, I would say buy it...that is a pretty good price and if you are only changing out some minor things...it won't be a big deal...maybe a grand on top of the price of the car...

chip/tune: 600 or so, pretty important for your case..

Fuel injectors: around 200..shouldn't even need them

find out what size pump is in it...overall...you should be fine on the fuel injectors with 19's...

no...not a bad deal at all...if you get a SCT chip and dyno tune...you can verify the fuel volume and verify the injectors and pump are adequate or not...
