Hi All -

I am in the middle of removing the valve covers on a 4.6 99 Cobra to try and diag a loud ticking noise... I am having one heck of a time getting the drivers side cover off!

All bolts out, cover comes a good 2-3 inches off the head, but will not clear the brake booster and master cyliner assembly far enough to get it out. I have the typical haynes manual which says it should come off easily... but you know how those work!!

Has anyone else experienced it? How did you get them off... any tips? Anything specific I need to take off with them to allow more clearance?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I have removed them in car with my old 96 cylinder heads and intake manifold setup. On my 96 setup I had to remove the clutch cable from the firewall and the upper intake cover. On a 99 setup I would say only the clutch cable would really have to come out. It will be tight but it does come out with some manuevering.

I know this was in 2004 but i am writing this for others to see also ok. on 4v 4.6 99 cobra you need to take brake booster loose or off up to you. 3 bolts under the drivers side dash above brake pedal... and 1 or 2 on booster itself under the hood... 2# There is a 13mm bolt if i recall its 13mm in drivers side front wheel well that holds the brake line's undo this and will give you alot more room to work and more movement of the brake booster, Its just a bracket holding the brake lines k.. then remove spark plug cover 10 mm then coil on plugs then blow out with compressed air don't pull the plugs.... now remove all bolts on valve cover also remove bolt holding dipstick on block..now make sure wiring harness is clear and also get a 10mm and unbolt fuel rail, do not take fuel rail off just need abit of wiggle room. and ofcourse pcv valve and any other things on valve cover.. now pull slowly and wiggle it upward. should be easy now... passenger side is the same except disconnecting fuel line off fuel rail use the green fuel disconnect tool i got the complete set at O'rielys for $20, make sure you bleed off fuel pressure from the shrader valve it looks like a tire valve stem before you disconnect the fuel line on passenger backside of motor, OR YOU WILL GET A FACE FULL OF FUEL OR SOAK YOUR CARS PAINT>>>>ETC>>>>, just use and small screw driver and rag to catch a tiny bit of fuel u might get , also remove the crooked looking heater core hose off of the firewall only on passenger firewall....and also remove the foam padding on the ac line on passenger side. I didnt disconnect my ac but in some cases you might need to. my vehicle is a 1999 PROCHARGED METHANOL INJECTED SVT COBRA MUSTANG...This isnt an easy job but if you take your time it shouldnt be to tough...Gary
