I have a chance to get a good deal on an 1999 explorer 5.0 engine to drop in my 69 mustang. I haven't decided if I want to mess with EFI conversion yet so I'm thinking carb right now. I know I need to change to a front sump oil pan and also change the timing cover to allow for the dipstick. Will my timing cover from my 69 302 bolt on to the explorer engine? Will my C4 trans bolt up? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'm moving this one to Classic Tech from 5.0 Tech. I'm betting the guys and gals here who own the classics could tell you exactly what you need to do, to make your swap happen. :nice:

Same deal as a 79-95 Stang motor. You'll need to swap to a front sump pan, move the dipstick tube to the timing cover for starters. And if you have a manual transmission, you'll also need a bracket to mount the clutch pivot on the block (this used to be mounted to a threaded hole at the drivers side rear of the block till 1977)

i am in the process of installing a 94 bronco 351 into a 70 mach 1. Bored and stroked to 408 and went with 5.0 efi stuff. It's not an easy swap unless you know what you are doing....i didnt....but do now. In the end it should be worth it, but there is a lot to do. I am just about ready to fire it up. Just need to mount the serpentine, etc.

Good luck with headers. The gt40P heads flow good, its just a shame more companies dont make headers to fit. Stock manifolds I have heard will fit, however. If the engine is going to remain stock, the manifolds will be fine.

they make gt40-p swap headers for classics

also add to the list 50oz balance flexplate for your c4 tranny also you gonna need a balancer since the explorer uses the compact front acc setup like a 94-95 stang

also you will have to remove the oil filter boss out of your stock motor because the exploder uses a water cooled adapter easy to do though

The oil cooler piece can probably stay, I just mounted a similar piece from a 70's 460 in my 77 Comet (same engine bay) to point the filter downward. If the threaded piece in the block is metric, then just use it as is and screw on a FL820S filter.

What about the flywheel?

I have the 96 block and the last thing I need to account for is the flywheel / flexplate, I have the one that came with the engine.

Will it fit under my c4

Not trying to hijack, but this thread is hella convenient.

BTW, the 5.0 guys say the tfs stage one cam and the explorer motor is the 'magic combo' putting a lot of guys into the high 12's with traction.
