99 GT, 4.6, auto, engine exploded...

Wife's car 90K miles, auto trans, well maintained with synthetics.

Called me at work: "car was hard to start and now it sounds like the belt is hitting the underside of the hood."

Happened pulling out of the driveway.

All the coolant was blown into the oil and blowing oil/coolant out the engine from down under.

Plug on #3 cylinder crushed. Have not even bothered to compression test it.

Anyone had this happen?

I guess it blew a head gasket, hydro locked, threw a rod...

Thoughts? Impressions? Where to get a 4.6 and about how much?

My 2000s engine went at 56k.. is it the passenger side? Theres a known problem with the head gasket on that side in certain 99/00 vins.

Mine started knocking and shot oil all over the engine bay..oil psi wouldnt go over 20lbs. Ford warranty put in a whole new shortblock.

Like stated before, some 00's had head gasket issues. Ford never made a recall....figures.

You could probably find an engine on ebay. Hell, goto a junk yard and pull one. It'd be cheaper than a rebuild...

at your local ford dealership you can get a complete cobra swap including t56, ecu/ wire harness, water pump, tb/plenum, alternator, and ehaust manifolds, but no supercharger for 6 grand. that will be a nice upgrade if you kno how to do the labor:nice:

You can get a new 4.6L bare block for like $300 i think from FRPP. Let me look it up for you. BRB :)

EDIT:
- Ok scratch that, i was off by a grand LOL here is the link. Its $1,350, but you could use everything else from your engine and throw it on this. (hope you're a mechanic though, a lot of work to do)

OH NO WAIT!!! I FOUND IT! IT WAS $300!!

Anyway, browse around this page, and then find a local FRPP distributor from the page and call them up. Ask them for a free catalog when ya walk in too. they gave me one when i bought my T-Lock rebuild kit. Awesome catalog :)

Do those bare blocks come with the crank in them? That would be a lot of work to swap thaat..I would rather buy a semi-complete block.. I saw a nice 02Gt motor and tranny go on eBay yesterday for $1500

Ford can't recall every 4.6 because a few of them leak oil from the passenger head..

LOL if ford or any other manufactuer issued a recall for every tsb there would be no manufactuers left.
