99 to 02 Mustang GT engine swap?

This is my first time doing an engine swap, I've got some help but they are not mustang gurus, I need to know if it is possible to put a 2002 SOHC GT engine into a 1999 Mustang GT? I blew a head gasket on mine and basically grenaded the engine. I just picked up a bare bones engine out of a 02 GT used. I've started transferring my parts eg. water pump altenator etc, to the new engine I am noticing some little differences between the two namely so far the flywheel/clutch setup, apparently 99 - mid 01 is 8 bolt flywheel, and mid 01-04 is 6 bolt flywheel? If anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated. I just would like to know if it is possible, and maybe an idea on some of the mods i will have to make, before I get to deep. Thanks very much.
P.s. My 99 is a 5 spd. and the 02 engine is out of an automatic

take your flywheel and replace the flexplate on the new engine, that should bolt up all fine

thanks for info, but I don't think I explained myself well enough, apparently 99 - mid 01 is 8 bolt flywheel, and mid 01-04 is 6 bolt flywheel? That's my dilema right now.

you need a 6 bolt flywheel for a 10.5 clutch.. the 00-2001.5 cars have the correct flywheel..

this is because your 99 is equiped with a windsor 4.6 fromt he factory where in 00 they switched to the romeo 4.6 with a 6 bolt crank..

I was just about to say that. There are two different 4.6 SOHC engines Ford put in the mustang. Windsor and Romeo. Romeo is pronounced RO-mayo, like Alfa-Romeo. Its in Italy

actually the 2000's are windsor blocks as well 01 are romeo's

It can be done with little or no effort

I just purchased a centerforce billet 6 bolt flywheel, from my local mod shop and that cleared my problems right up. So long story short 2002 GT 4.6l into a 99GT everything is exactly the same, no mods necessary. Runs great no problems so far, if any body has any questions just post a reply.

Many GT's came with the 8-bolt. I beleive the mid-01 later with the t-3650 got an 11" clutch like the Cobras and have an 8-bolt flywheel. The 99-00 GT's got a 6-bolt and a 10.5" clutch.

Unless te block is aluminum, it's most lilkely a GT engne

I'm new here and not sure how to start a new thread? I would like some advice on this engine swap I'm doing, I'm going to put a 99 mustang 4.6 with auto trans in a 1997 Mustang GT that also had auto trans. I'm guessing I need to swap out the computer, Ignition and what else?

Not Correct...My 99 has an 8 Bolt crank and 11" Clutch.

Search on Windsor to Romeo swap. Lots of ppl have done it (including myself).

There are a few "issues" to contend with. And the best way to solve them depend upon your goals, budget, and expertise.

I have a 1999 manual 5spd with a blown 4.6. I found a 4.6l from a 2004 mustang gt for $700 at my local junkyard. Do I need to purchase anything other than a 6 bolt flywheel? The 2004 does not have any accessories on it.

First you need to decide which size clutch that you want to use? 10.5' or 11".

If you want to use an 11" clutch THEN get a flywheel from a 2001+ Mustang

If you ant to use an 10.5" clutch THEN get a flywheel from a 1996-1998 Manual Mustang.

Obviously you will need a new pilot bearing.

The swap will need other parts such as motor mounts, gaskets and such. This has been covered many times under Windsor to Romeo swap.
