My cars odemeter just turned to 100,000 miles two days ago and its already falling apart. a/c compresor whines a lil when not on, but it i turn it on it makes this terrible noise and starts to smoke up. i think it might be the clutch set up on the front, but i am not really sure how it works to determine that. Is the clutch in front and the compressor two diffrent pieces or one.

any ifo would be great

My A/C compressor was acting the same when it bit the dust.
Last month my A/C compressor went out on me.My ten year old
Ford A/C compressor was making strange whines when it was not
on at all and it would blow out warm only.It was even leaking r-134
charge on my garage floor.I ended up going to Ford and buying a
brand new Ford A/C compressor and the issue was fixed.

There is a electro-magnet that engages the clutch on the compressor, and the tollerances between the two discs have to be pretty much dead on for it to engage properly. I'm not sure what they are made out of. The cluch units are usually replacable on most cars, but I know they can be hard to find. Parts stores sometimes only carry the entire compressor, but if you shop around enough you should be able to find someone that carries just the clutch unit alone. I'm not sure how they are installed on the compressor, might just be bolted onto the front  and hopefully not pressed-on.

But on the other hand, if its the original compressor, it might be a waste of money and time to replace the clutch unit only to find out the compressor itself has gone tits up.
