a/c or no a/c?????????

whats up guys well got another question... my coupe.. still has the ac and the smog pump.... im thinking of eliminating them both.. to create.. less drag of my motor....wich releases more horses.. so any suggestion would help... o by the way i live in the wondeful state of california... so a/c might be a good thing.. but i still want thoose horses.. thanks

if you plan on driving the car on trips and for enjoyment I would not even think about ditching the a/c, I ditched the smog on my car though. the only way I would get rid of the a/c is if I were building a full blow drag car, seriously, how much horsepower do you think you will gain by getting rid of the a/c?

You only lose hp when the a/c is on.
otherwise you're losing maybe 1hp to just spin the compressor
when its not running.

If you need a/c than keep it. I removed mine cause I live in NH and it was dead anyway so it was an excuse to clean up the engine bay.

Also deleting the A/C makes it harder to install most centrifugal supercharger systems without some hassle

I was just debating this to my friend. He's finishing up a 347 job on his car and filled all the engine bay holes and everything is coming together really nice but he's unsure if he wants to put the AC back in. I'm a little torn between it myself. For my car, when i got it the AC was trashed...lines were already cut and it needed a lot of work, and i was wanting to cut weight so i ditched it. On his car, he's going to be making a crap load of power and his car is SO nice that i told him to keep it. I mean why not? In the end i think he decided to remove all the major parts and store them, and run a short belt for a while. You can always reinstall it later if you keep all the parts and plug the lines in the car and do it right.

That said, i would say if your AC is in nice working order and you're not going racing, keep it. If it's ragged out and needs a lot of work....screw it. I like driving with the windows down anyways, but if you get caught in traffic on a hot day it's nice to have.

i can see taking out the a/c, i will be taking it out on mine shortly, but taking the smog pump out will you be able to pass emissions, wondering why a lot of ppl do that and what does it really do and how will you gain hp

Nothing is better than having the A/C on while waiting in line at the drag strip. I love watching guys opening their doors, or taking their helemt off, or getting out every chance they can get. I shut mine off when I tree up, then smoke the guy next to me that has removed A/C to "have a lighter Mustang!!!"

It is not worth the cost of losing the comfort. There is a world of modifications you can do to make your stang gain that tenth other than losing creature comforts. Smog pump fine, but parasitic horsepower loss is not as beneficial as some lead to believe. The weight savings coupled with the accessory ease is where you gain, but again, not worth the .1

A/C for sure, if you plan on driving it more than a 'street car' or 'weekend warrior'...

Deleting the a/c is cheap to me.

Depending on how hot and how you like the a/c, it is up to you.

I'd rather beat someone with working a/c, then them thinking I deleted accessories just to beat them

Heat index was 112-113* here today. I'm keeping my a/c...

They frown upon that at my local track. They even made announcments telling guys to not run their A/C because they were pouring water all over the staging lanes and starting line.

If my A/C worked in my 5.0 i would have kept it. Since the car wasn't really a DD and i didn't feel like investing the time and $$ into a proper 134a conversion, i ditched it...otherwise i would have just taken a big poop and made up the weight difference

x2 there was a brand new vette with an older guy in it that waited at least an hour, then he got up to the tree, and they made him go back because of it, and wait some more

Keep it. Pull the belt and spin the A/C pulley and you will see that it's freewheeling when the A/C isn't running. It has no more drag than a delete pulley. I would bet it's less than 1hp. The only thing you would gain from deleting the A/C is a little weight off the front end, and a cleaner engine bay, but I love the comfort in traffic and when it's too hot for running with the windows down.

After having a car without the A/C(my car) I can tell you to keep it. Id like to put it back on mine(kept all the parts) but the condensor wont fit anymore. All in the name of performance right.....

I dont have a/c and i don't mind it at all. I got two a/c's doing 85 down the highway..... But i drive with the windows down EVERYWHERE. so even if i had a/c it would all go right out the window

My A/C was completely removed before I ever got hold of my notch. If the parts were still in place and it just wasn't working, I *MAY* have tried to make it functional again, but not likely. Deleting a WORKING A/C system is kinda silly, IMO, but deleting one that doesn't is just personal preference.

Me, I really don't use A/C all of the time that other people do, just when it's really sticky outside, for the most part ... which is only about one month out of the year down here in AZ. The rest of it is totally bearable. So, need versus want is an issue depending upon the kind of climate where you live.

Also, not having to work around all of that crap in the engine bay is a major plus.

Without the A/c it gives you a nice clean engine bay look. Thats mainly why i did it! Plus it needed to be recharged and i never did cause i didn't need it so i just deleted it
