A/C questions

i have a 65 with a 302 crusin bout 900 miles. the temp this week has been in the 100's and i dont have A/C. I have the factory compressor, mounting bracket and interior unit that i want to install. ive heard about aftermarket a/c kits. anybody have suggestions on this or should i do all factory stuff? im 20 and like to drive fast so loosing to much power and gainging to much weight is a factor. thanks guys.

Unless your actually racing, you'll never notice the weight or the HP loss.

are there any kits out there to make this a simple task? ive never installed an a/c unit in a car so i dont even know where to start

If you have the original factory setup, it is probably set up for R-12 refrigerant and will cost alot to have recharged. If you are looking to find an aftermarket system, check out:

Their website lacks on detailed information, but you can call them at (813)251-2356 and request a free catalog. It has some good info in it.
Classic Auto Air carries most parts that you would need to either get your system up and running, or provide you with a complete aftermarket system. I chose to upgrade my factory system to R-134 refrigerant. I kept everything stock, but used a Sanden compressor and two new style hoses. Changing back would be easy.
I think you can do alot better on the price by piecing a system together through other suppliers rather than buying a kit. Classic Auto Air is very helpful, but their prices seem very high.

Do you have any of the system now?

on the 65, the factory system is basically an underdash add on. It consists of
Compressor, brackets,pulleys

evaporator, which in your case is an underdash hang on unit

condenser, the thing that looks like a radiator in front of the RAD

expansion valve, mounted on the inlet of the evaporator,usually comes with the EVAP

Reciever dryer, filter for the AC unit, looks like a black can with a sight glass in the top of it.

and hose assy.

If you want to piece it together from the boneyard, the only part you really need NEW is the Reciever Dryer.

I can talk you threw te whole job if you want to do it yourself, you'll just have to have a shop evac and charge it when your done.

ouch...i didnt know i needed all that stuff...all i have is the unit that hangs from the dash, compressor and brackets. and maybe pullies. ill probably check into a whole new kit i guess.
