A Myth To be solved!! Acetone Is it good for gas?

OK so i found this site and started to watch some videos.
I came to a video where this guy proves that acetone is a good additive to your gas and it increases your gas mileage alot.

So I tryed it out, its been a month now an if feels like my car runs alot better smoother and alot of power is restord. I used to get about 14 miles to the gallon but now I get about 20 miles

The car I tested this on was a 2001 Toyota 4runner, It has now allmost 106k miles and still runs strong.


Is this myth true?:shrug:

It seemed to work great for me.
 
Acetone is often used for octane booster.
I believe up to a 20% concentration can be used IIRC.
So about 2 gallons per 10 max.
Usually a small amount of diesel fuel and/or tranny fluid is added to the mix.
Acetone is rough stuff as is. The other stuff is cut in to give it some cushion so to speak.

Beyond that, I know nothing.
 
I read that about 3 months ago. I have been running acetone every since. I used to get 17 , but with the acetone i get on average 19-21. I did also feel a difference with the power in my truck. I didnt use near that amount mentioned above tho. I have been running 2.25 oz to every 10 gal. I have not seen the dramatic difference that i read about online (10 miles per gal) but hey my 3 was kinda cool, and it feels good to have back that power. Was tested on a 2000 Mazda*(Ranger)* 4.0L 4X4 with 93,000 on the clock.
 
Never heard of this, what's the skinny? You add acetone to the tank and it suppose to add mileage and power? Isn't Acetone just an alcohol/ethynol/something-else-enol derivative? I know that there are probably some chemistry majors on here who will give a long detailed explanation which will cause me to glaze over after the first few sentences, but I am still interested in it.

since acetone is a solvent, all you have done is clean out the junk in the engine that prevented it from operating efficiently. now that you have done that, you can stop using it for now. i would run the acetone about every 5 tanks to keep the system clean.
 
I do not believe it works. I cannot see any reasons why it would work. I can only see it being harmful. I would not recommend it in high concentrations, and can almost guarantee you will not see increased gas mileage with long term usage. You may use it to clean your injectors and intake tract, however I cannot see the acetone itself increasing combustion or efficiency of the actual motor as a primary effect. It's purpose would be to clean and the cleanliness will improve the mileage, thus it is a secondary result.

Believe me, if it worked, was safe and gave such positive results you would have heard about it already, there would be a more marketable additive off the shelf and everyone would be running it. Believe me, there is too big of an after market to counter the oil industry if such a miracle product were real.

They got a carbureted car and a fuel-injected car to test several types of devices. The cars were placed on a dynamometer, which allows the car to drive without moving anywhere.

Test devices and additives:

* Fuel line magnets: working on the "principles of hydrodynamics," they are supposed to align the molecules for more efficient consumption.
* Acetone additive: supposed to make gasoline burn more efficiently

Sorry guys, but either something else was changed or you're experiencing something a lot of us often do. We expect a change therefore we fabricate the said change. Although we don't realize it, we find the results to match that which we expect. It happens a LOT in science, and many 20th century scientists were guilty of fudging results to obtain the data they desired.
 
I love mythbusters - especially how they keep pointing out that data can be pulled out proving the myth - if you ignore other data.......

Speaking of that...... Any of you old-timers (like me) remember the 1970's predictions that we were heading towards an imminent "Second Ice Age"; with lots of data to prove the point? I guess the whole "Global Warming" issue blew that out of the water!








Unless, of course, they start screaming about another "Ice Age" in the 2030's........

I read that mythbusters thing on another site after i had been doing it for a while, so i knew that it was not actually helping my engine. Best i can imagine is the cleaning effect from the acetone helped bring my engine back to its stock mileage, since i bought the truck used i have no idea what it got new, but i do know that something changed. I filled up last night and re-set my trip odometer, i did not put any acetone in my truck, lets see what happens! I agree with what was said above acetone i can not imagine would help in most cases, its so ruff that you would think that it would break down seals and lines if used in large amounts.

someone checked back and found that the global climate change types go back and forth about every 30 years or so between global warming and global cooling.

Thats true and that when the dinosauers were around the average world temp was 75 degrees and the average world temp right now is 68.

Also global warming will create another ice age, the earth will compensate itself, its done it in the past, the global warming will make the ice melt to a point where the earth will throw itself in another small or big ice age and refreeze all the water. I read that in a book before for an earth class.

My roommate used Acetone in his Buick GN to clean his gas tank and his injectors. It worked quite well, improving his gas mileage and engine performance.

I've not done it to the stang yet, but was planing on it after I got it back on the road.

Something I noticed on my wife's 99 Camry is that fuel system cleaners/additives reduce her gas mileage. We figure the opposite would be the case, but it's not.

So I've been wondering if that was because the carbon and gunk is fouling the O2 sensor and thus causing the computer to richin the mixture.

it is possible that a fouled O2 sensor is causing an overly rich mixture. you might also have a vacuum leak in the system somewhere.
