A Short Shifter...

Hey guys/gals,

So I have a chance to get my hands on a brand UPR Blue thunder short throw shifter for about half of what it costs from the manufacturer website.

Now I know that most people on here either use the Steeda Tri-Ax, MGW, or the Pro 5.0 units, how about this shifter?

My only worry is: I have to daily this car in stop and go traffic about 4 times a week for a round trip of 30 miles. Will the UPR be a good deal in that situation? Also will it be any good when I'm racin- errm.. driving in a spirited fashion?

I drove my friends 97 GT with a Steeda Tri Ax shifter and I loved how
it shifted and the feel of it.
Not to many people seem to like the UPR blue thunder shifter.
There is a reason why it is cheaper because it is a poor quality cheap
knock off of the Steeda Tri Ax shifter I would skip on that idea.

i'd pass on the UPR...save up for the MGW well worth your time and money.

I have a Pro 5.0 and I wish I had gotten an MGW.

mgw will be your best friend in traffic from what i have heard... mgw is for more everyday driving and very light track duty... steeda is more evenly matched for street/strip...

I have a UPR Blue Thunder shifter and love it, but then again, I am partial to UPR stuff. I picked it up on ebay locally for a really good deal. I installed it and left the factory shift boot and knob and everything went together really well. As far as driving around town, I have no problem. It actually makes it more fun to drive. For the track...night and day difference! All of the other name brand shifters are good, I guess sit just comes down to a matter of opinion and prefference. I do believe the UPR shifter does have a lifetime warranty.

Thanks for the replies! So looks like there are choices to be made, do I get this shifter on the cheap or save up and go for the MGW?

BTW I felt the MGW on my friends 95 Cobra, it feels very good. I've also felt and drove with the B&M Pro Ripper(?) but it felt a bit to hard to engage. So I'm still kind of up in the air.

If you are getting it really cheap, buy it, sell it, take profit to put towards a better shifter.

I tested out a Tri-Ax on a guys '97GT once. I thought it was still the stock shifter the way the shifts felt about 1 mile apart. Get the MGW with the silver race handle (You have to call and request the silver handle). This is as tight and close shifts as you will ever get.

I had the UPR for a few years and loved it. In fact I still miss it when I'm at the track, the MGW I have now is TOO smooth for the track for my tastes. The UPR had a nice notchiness that made it much easier for me to powershift at the track.

On the street though I wouldn't trade my MGW for anything.

Your call, you can't go wrong either way. If you don't like the UPR after a while, sell it on EBay for what you paid for it if you're getting it for cheap

I have a UPR - sold my MGW and put the UPR back in... And honestly, it doesn't make the car any less fun to drive with the UPR haha. The UPR is a decent piece, but it will get "loose" eventually, but it'll still be waaay better than stock!

Go for it.

Ok guys, I decided to snag the UPR, like everyone said for the price I can't really go wrong.

I will also get CobraBob's shifter gaskets while I'm at it. Should make for a nice upgrade going from the stock 140k mile old FoMoCo shifter.

I HIGHLY recommend MGW, install is a breeze and takes about 45 minutes tops. It is my first official mod on my new 00 GT and what a great buy, make sure you buy the interior dust boot for 8$ on the MGW website

All in all... definitely worth every penny.

I've had the UPR "Blue Thunder" shifter w/ a Hurst handle & classic white knob for 5 yrs. now. Combination works beautifully. No issues.

I'm pretty happy with my UPR, its been good to me in stop and go traffic for over a year now...
