A terrible squeal

Bill is saying to put pressure behind the bolt's head as you turn. The head should be quite exposed.

yeah my bolt was like that pretty sure it was the same one. It had so much corsion on it that it wouldn't come out if you can get a tourch in tehre can't remember how much room is down there heat that sucker up. If not spray a **** load of lube in there that'll open her up.



Just once I need to keep my head out of the gutter
 
The pulley should have to come off first. Leave the belt on, remove the 3 bolts on the pulley, then remove the troublesome bolt. It cant have been this simply, can it? :shrug:

The pulley was the first thing off...no problems there. Got the bolt out today...the prybar method worked quite well...now as for getting the smog pump itself apart...there's three obvious bolts that are holding it together, what else needs to be taken out for it to open up?

When I took mine apart, it was a real tight fit. The bearings (cool little roller races) in there are a little intricate because the vanes move in an elliptical plane. The mainshaft goes through about 3 sets of these bearings.

Dont put the pump in a vice (the compression can distort the housing enough to make it hard to disassemble). Just turn the shaft back and forth till it starts working loose. It should come apart if you keep doing this.

Oh, I just remembered that I had to whack mine with a rubber mallet to break it free initially - that might be helpful.

Seriously, it's simple. The back of the pump separates from the housing (that's how I took mine apart alteast). There's a long shaft that goes down the middle of the pump longitudinally. To increase volumetric flow, the vanes inside the pump travel in an variable path - the vanes have a recess to fall into as the pump rotates. It seems to me that centrifugal force is what makes the vanes want to pop out and get very close to the walls, to move air. But if the bearings get some slop, the vanes hit the wall instead. The vanes in my pump were hitting the wall ever-so-lightly on one side's wall, which made a nasty whirring noise.
 
as far as separating the back of the housing from the front though...I took out the three bolts, and I did indeed hit it with a mallet a couple times...the sucker wouldn't budge. Is there anything other than those three bolts that need come out for it to separate?
