I have to replace my AC compressor and need to know if there is a practical alternative to the original York unit. I would like to switch to an R-134 unit but want something that will cool effectively.

If I do an R-134 conversion on a rebuilt York compressor, will I need to replace anything else in the system?

If there is another compressor that is easily adapted, what else will need to be changed with it?

Are there any other alternatives to R-12 and R-134?

I have just got my AC reworked with a Sanden compressor, and it works very well. This compressor runs quieter than the York I had, and draws less HP.

I don't have the model no. right here, but I can check under the hood for the number if you are interested. Also check the NPD catalogue wich also offers the Sanden compressor as a Mustang AC upgrade.

What vehicle was the Sanden originally installed on? I don’t intend to give $454.95 to NPD if I can get away with it.

Sure would like to find something in the local boneyard that won’t break my wallet.

You should be able to find a Sanden in just about any junkyard for a sweet price. Manufactures have been using them for years. I have the SD508 in my '66 and it works great.

Just be sure to let a qualified A/C person do the swap so they can properly discharge the R-12, and do the conversion correctly for you. You will probably need a custom bracket, if so you can get one from Classic Auto Air.

Start with a good search of the forum, and you should find some good threads... here is a recent one with good info: ac sadan compressor conversion.......????????

Actually, I have a similar problem. I just picked up a 67 GTA with factory air and would like to get it working, but I'd like to keep everything as original as possible. My compressor seems to be fine (engages and dis-engages with no funny noises, etc.) but needs to be recharged and I'm sure replace a few lines.
What's the best way to go? I'm thinking of updating to 134a instead of recharging with R12. What needs to be changed?

Just got off the phone with Classic Auto Air in Tampa. Looks like they provide everything for the conversion for about 451 bucks. Don't want to spend that much but it may be my best option.
