Dont forget to pull the "Spout" Connector when adjusting your timing and remember to reinstall it when your done.

in case you dont know what the spout is.heres a pic. you can unplug the small tip of that connector.

loosen the distributer bolt, remove the spout and hook up your timing light. start the car and adjust the timing. shut the car off and tighten the nut. i usually like to start it again to make sure the dist never moved. Then put the spout back in.

I would not recomend adjusting the timing without the use of a timing gun..not something you want to do by ear. Get the hanes manual and spend some time here looking around and using the search feature. My bet is in a few months you'll be answering questions as often as asking.

no one can recommend what timing you should run. you will have to see what works best (depends on every separate motor and conditions).

I personally dont like to run on the ragged edge of detonation. good luck.

To elaborate on what HISSIN50 said, every engine/combo is different. Some like more timing, some less. If you get to much timing, detonation can cause serious damage. Detonation can be identified as a pinging noise under engine load. My suggestion would be to advance the timing in 2 degree increments, and test it out. If you feel confident, go until you hear pinging, then back off the timing a few degrees.

Is using a timing gun the easiest way to time an engine and where could I find something like that?

If i am simply advancing from a known timing mark (say stock 10*), i often do it by ear and feel. Then one can check what you end up with a timing gun. or you can simple determine that you want to bump it to XX degrees (like 14*) and use the gun.
In any event, you are gonna want a gun in most liklihood (though you will use your ear to ensure you are not pinging at whatever you set the timing at).

parts stores and Sears sell timing guns, to name a small segment of places you can get one.

good luck.
