Aerostar driveshafts?

I have heard conflicting stories about the Aerostar aluminum ones. Some say they bolt right up, others say they need to be cut, others say just new U joints are needed to fit the stangs. My car is standard the driveshaft I can get cheap is from a 91 van. Does anyone know for sure what will work?

I had one but didn't use it. It would need to be cut because it's pretty long. I dont know about the u joints or yoke because mines didn't have them when I got it.

If it were possible, everyone would be grabbing them instead of spending $169 on a brand new ford one.

I think they are longer, I just went and bought an FMS driveshaft, because it also has new u-joints.

It needs to be from a 92-93-94 aerostar AWD and u will need u-joint part #353 from NAPA. just did it on mine bolted right up after the u-joint swap

There was a thread on here not to long ago that said the price of the FMS driveshaft was going up quite a bit. So grabbing one from an aerostar may become alot more popular. I am glad I got my FMS while they were cheap.

Well, it would be kind of dumb if you had co have it cut and rewelded when there is a FMS unit complete for less than $200. That's F'd up thought, Ford would put an aluminum drivshaft on a Aerostar but put on old steel one on thier performance car. That's Ford for you though.

You the man!!!!! so your car is standard? Man that is just what I wanted to hear....but the one I could get for $30 is from a 91 so no go but it will still be cheaper.

No I would not want to have it cut and welded but it still would likely be cheaper than most new ones anyway.
$169 is cheapest I ever saw up to over $300.

Not too much off topic but, is the aod and manual the same driveshaft?

the FACTORY aod driveshaft has a dampner on it and is longer than the 5 speed driveshaft. aluminum driveshafts are balanced to fit either application.

fyi, the alum driveshaft is now about $260. it went up about $100.

Summit as well as some other places I checked still sell at the 'normal' price (Summit is $159.95).

As far as the Aerostar shaft goes -- I have a hard time believing that Ford would put the same piece in an AWD Aerostar as they would sell for high-performance Mustangs...with that said, I don't think they did. It may be aluminum, but I doubt it is as strong, well balanced, or even as light as the FMS piece. Those reasons, as well as the new U-joints, are my reasons for buying these and putting them on my cars.

i had a 90 lwb aod, 5.0 equipped truck that had an aluminum shaft and let me tell ya it was super light and it was like 4 inches wide, maybe 5. the stock mustang shafts are thinner and heavier. if i get a driveshaft off of a 92 van will the yoke and everything work except for the u joints. when i get some money i am going to a junkyard looking for one of these.

it's a tough score, as not only do you have to find an aerostar that has all wheel drive, but you've got to find one that another mustang guy hasn't beaten you to, and one that a forklift has munched the shaft all up, which is common.

d&d last time I checked was selling the alum shafts very cheap still Like $160 or so.

Which U joint has to be changed on the shaft?

from what I understand, the one at the yoke. If you do a proper search here, forget who, but someone listed the exact part # of the u joint you need.

Actually in the new summit mag their DS price went to the 260 mark as well. It finally went up 100 across the board completely. I got mine right before the price hike.

ok, so the front yoke from the mustang shaft has to be used on the aerostar shaft correct?

the part number is posted in this thread, i read it. here in houston, there are hundreds of salvage yards thatalready have parts taken off and put in computers, so the driveshafts should be straight. i went top one last month that had to have about 200 of them chiming in the wind hanging from the ceiling
