I have a:
-306 sbf
-the motor is basically a budget NMRA pure street engine
-N/A revs to 8000 rpms
but my weak point is my heads i have ported edelbrock rpms w/ 47cc comb chambers

My question is has anyone ever tested AFR 205 Vs. 185 heads on a 306.

A 205 on a 306 is a hell of a thing. They will get you to 8k revs but I hope you have a rather stout engine that can do it without problems. With the 205's you should lose most streetability and low-end. with the 185's you will have a compromise. The 165's would be the best for a 306 not looking to scream it's ass off a lot in the high rpm's, but still a lot of capability.

What is the entire combo...

The 205's are big for that combo if your running a PS style cam. Are emissions a concern? With the PS combo's I have been involved in the runners are not the large (205cc) even with a nice ported head. Do you want to be legal for PS?

Joey, a AFR185 would be fine for you combo and retain emissions legal status, otehr wise a 205 would not hurt depends on the entire combo

combo

650 race demon
custom ground cam not alot of lift but alot of duration and 107 lobe sep
victor jr intake
edlbrock heads
good bottom end
c4 trans w/brake 4500 stall
430 rear end gears
27x11.50 hoosier quick times
car weights 2800 pounds with me out of it
the engine makes peak power between 6500 and 8000

i was either going to leave the engine alone and spray it or loosen up the conv and give it more motor
my best time is a 11.50 at 119.00 mph
shift at 7800

I would not suggest a 205 for that combo, @ 2800 pounds and 119mph traps you should be able to go a high 10 with the current combo.

Do you know how much HP you make? What about the TQ? IF you want to switch heads I'd look into a ported TW head or if you want a AFR look at the 58cc 185's but your going to lose some compression over what you are running now.

hp compression

the engine is about 11:1 maybe alittle less (big valve reliefs)
the engine makes about 440 hp and about 430 lbs of torq
between 6500 and 8000

previous

previous engines i have built with similar combos i only went to a 185 and i never got to test the 205
but the 185 made a big difference over a 165

rw numbers

The last time i had it on the chasis dyno my car made i think 365 rwhp and 350 rwtq.
I just need to figure out how much more hp i can make with more compression and better heads or just spray what i got.
I just like having all motor

Well most of the P/S legal combo's I have built make over 420RWHP,with less compression, and a lot of restrictions.

The more I think about it you could make a 205 work, especially with a carb motor. You would have to go with a more aggresive cam and I would go soild roller, spin it 8000rpm. You could also go to a Vic Jr manifold, and a Vic Jr head.

Do the 205's thow a 750 Mighty demon on it,port match the intake to the heads, and put on 1.7 rockers if you dont ,or get another custom cam if you do.

Solid roller? Yes,I agree with Rick at 8000rpm you will need one.

As for your converter,is it a 9.5",9" or an 8"?

If you want to run on motor, get an 8" and have it stall around 5500rpms.

Can you get a thinner head gasket (to increase compression and improve quench)?

And whats the exhaust set-up?

The machine shop machined the heads and 47cc is the combustion chamber size i was told. The intake was angle milled to fit.

I am not building a pure street engine just alot of parts are used from a pure street engine basis.

The oem lifters can run at 8000 with not problem at the right spring pressure. I have done it on a few engines.

I also have a 8 inch converter.

Rick a pure street engine cannot use a victor jr intake or solid roller cam and the cam cannot have over 500" of lift.
Do you havemore specific tips on how to 420 rwhp out of my motor with that cam. What kind of stall should i run.

exhaust is (headers 13/4" primarys w/3" col) and 3in" exhaust mac (prochamber and dumps)

In my 2005 NMRA rule book Rick you can't use the Victor Jr. intake and it also says you have to use stock oem Ford lifters. Unless they changed the heads your aloud to use the AFR185's either. Just trying to help.

His combo isn't P/S legal and he isn't trying to make it P/S legal so I mentioned the Vic Jr intake and soild roller......
