AFR 205's and Dual Plane Intake on a 393 Stroker?

I have plugged different combo's into Desktop Dyno 2000. I understand that the software can be off a liitle. I found that using AFR 205's and a dual plane intake will make more than using AFR 185's. I need to stay with a Stealth or Performer RPM intake due to using a shaker on my engine. What do you guys think about this combo and what are the pro's and con's of going with the 205's instead of the 185's. The car will be for the street and seldom on the track. I want my peak RPM to be around 6000 or so. And I can also always go with the Vic Jr. intake down the road if I want to make more HP and part with the shaker. Thanks.

Gram has a 393 also. He's running the 185's and a Performer Air Gap. Might want to talk him and see what he says.

Why can't you use the shaker with another type of manifold? I'm looking at running a Victor Jr. and I would like to run the shaker scoop.

Using the Vic Jr. is too tall for the shaker. The scoop will be sticking too far out from the hood. The Vic Jr. is for sure out of question.

i have no doubt a set of 205s will make more than the 185s in the very high topend, but i would think the difference wouldn't be nearly as big as the torque difference in the low end. I think the 185s match better.

How much would the sitting too high? If it's less then an inch then maybe something can be worked out.

you could always try a big block shaker base, it's a little shorter that the small block base. if you can't find one reasonably, just get a regular big block bsae and get the "shaker maker" ring from www.fordramair.com

i agree with the above, try the big block base. Also, if you do go with 205s, you really should get a Vic Jr. and ditch plans to keep your rpms under 6k. 205s are for engines revving a good bit higher than 6k (and would match better with a Vic Jr.)

I was thinking if I went with the 205's< I could also switch to the Vic Jr. The 205's come with the upgraded .600" lift springs. After paying around $1300 for 185's and paying the $200 upgrade for springs, I would be at $1500 for the 185's. I can buy the 205's for around $1650 and they come with the upgraded springs. I understand the 205's will work better with the Vic Jr. intake, that is no doubt. My question is if the 205's would hurt performance. I called AFR today and they said no problem It would just be a bit softer on the low end compared to the 185's. I just don't know how soft. With that kind of torque, would it be noticed?

you have enough cubes that bottom will probably not suffer much if at all with the 205's. but the cam is definitely going to kill some low end torque but again you have plenty of cubes so i wouldn't worry about it too much. if you are set on that cam then go with the 205's because i don't think the 185's will flow enough air with that cam. just my opinion of course

How can you have custom roller cam w/o knowing which heads you are running? It will be a comprimise at best. You have heads and cam for a different rev range than the intake. Bigger heads will be choked out by a small intake runner. Opinions on here about engines should be for entertainment purposes only. Talk to ed curtis about it, he forgot more about this than any of us know. I believe his site is www.flowtechinduction.com . Benchracers are fun to talk to, but info should come from a real racer.

I pretty much have the same setup. 393 ci, afr 185, RPM, .555/288. int - .576/294. exh., C6, hooker super comp, dr gas X, 9" 3.70 trac, and a whole crap load of other goodies.

For street driving and occasssional strip or track, go with the 185's. Keep your rpm's in a reasonable range. If you are building mainly for competition then get the 205's but build it the right way and with the right parts. No point having the 205's if you aren't going to truely utilize them.

In all actuality the 205cc are STILL too small for a 393. You really should look at the 225. I'm running the 205cc heads WITH a victor Jr and a 248/254 .612/.621 solid roller cam and my hp is peaking at 6200 rpm. HARDLY a high rpm screamer. My car has absolutely NO SHORTAGE of torque down low either. The car is VERY streetable. Remember with a solid roller the cam acts more streetable than a hydraulic roller due to steeper profiles AND lash. Your cam doesn't have enough lift etc to peak at 6000 rpms especially with a performer rpm. If you put the 185cc heads and then the rpm intake you will peak about 5500-5650 rpms. Don't sell yourself short. Go with the 205cc and the rpm airgap or vic. jr. I milled 1/2 inch off my victor jr the clear the hood on my 66!!

I never thought about milling the bottom end of the intake. If I could do that with th 205's and Vic Jr. and get enough clearance for the shaker, that is what I would do. Does removing material from the bottom of the intake cause problems. I would also use the big block base to get me even lower.

If it is a street engine, why spin it past 6000 RPM? Here is the thing, with the 393 stroker combo, to run the engine past 6 you really should have a forged crank.

If you are not going to see the track much, run a 'regular' crank from scat, and shift at 5700-5800 RPM.

Guestimates on the HP of my engine is right around 500-550, with torque in the 500+ range.

If you don't need or want any more HP than that, save your money, go 185's, non-forged crank, and a performer air gap.

This way you keep your shaker, save some money, and still kick butt with a 500 HP engine.

But that is just my opinion.

You could also use a 1" spacer on your Air Gap to move your peak power about 750-1000 rpm higher than without.

You guys are defeating the purpose here. The air gap is only .2 of and inch shorter than the vic jr. Why shorten your powerband if the manifold is the same height. I can understand using the rpm because it will fit with no mods but to use the air-gap is useless IMHO.

By the way, you want to mill the carb pad not the bottom of the manifold!

I don't think the RPM will work with the shaker, it is too tall. What are you running on your 393? Are you using a shaker?
