i was looking at the afr165 and the gt40 turboswirl extra and the gt40 has bigger intake and exhaust ports... shouldnt that mean more power? how come more ppl take the afr's?

Bigger isnt always better. Its about how efficiently the air gets into and out of the combustion chamber.

think cfm flow vs runner size.

if the GT40 has a 170cc intake runner that flows 210cfm and the AFR has a 165cc runner that flows 250, not only does the afr have the flow advatage it also has a velocity advatage that lends to better cylinder filling.

that is not even taking into account chamber shape or exhaust flow.

Depends on what your budget is. I have the GT40-Y303s. Couldn't pass up the deal of new, never been fired aluminum heads for only $724 to my door. I bolted them on and instantly went 0.4sec faster in the 1/4mile. Sure, I would love a set of AFRs. They are some of the best set of heads out there for the money. But, even used they cost more than I spent. The Y303s can be ported/cleaned up to outflow the GT40-X303/5 heads.

Good deal but i would save an extra 300 bucks to pick up the afr's. I just bought a set of used afr185's for 1k shipped, with low miles. I dunno, but to me when your talking about a couple hundred dollars i would always wait until i could afford the better product.

Another good point. Save and get what you really want. I wanted a budget build. I was looking at GT40 and GT40P heads or having the stock heads reworked at the time. When the GT40 Y303s became availible for the same price as reworked cast iron heads with better flow and weight reduction I couldn't pass it up. If my goals at the time were to get the best heads availible at the time I would've saved for the AFRs.

I have the y303's they are ok. they came with an ecam in/on my frpp 302 340bhp crate motor. if i could do it again and didnt have to seriously worry about dependability i would have gone with a 92 or later 302 block, picked up some afr heads and a ed curtis cam with the intake ive got or an edelbrock/holly.
just wishing i could have "risked" going with a used block, but i couldnt dependability mattered waaay too much when i needed to get home from college after the stock engine blew up on me.
just my .02
