Aftermarket Fog Light Install

Hey guys,

Did a search on this topic and didn't find anything helpful. I purchased an aftermarket fog light set-up for my 86 LX. I need to run the wiring through the firewall so I can get to the switch. How do I do this? I looked and there appears to be only one massive harness coming through the firewall just below the windshield wiper motor. That grommet appears to be damn near impossible to get out. Just wondering what is the best way to run this wiring into the car cabin? Thanks for your help.

Hllon is right.

another alternative: one can make a small hole in the diaphram of the existing grommet, using a razor, dental pick, awl, etc. then feed the wire through. there is often a diaphram-like amount of rubber to the side of the main harness which can be sliced and a wire run through.

did 4 eyes come with fog lights as an option? if so, you might have the foglight wiring already in there - laying dormant. just a thought.

if you go the route that knowledgable Hllon suggested, the grommet looks like a rubber doughnut. parts stores and home stores sell them. they can be a bit of a PITA to get inserted correctly (for me anyhow).

good luck Paul.

Thanks again for the help guys. I'll probably just cut a small hole in the existing grommet. HISSIN, I don't know if there is existing fog light wiring. I'll take a look before hand, however. If there is existing wiring, what do I do with it? Splice the aftermarket lights into the harness? Then how do I make them work?

with the aero foxes, the LX's dont come with fog lights, but the harnesses are all there. i think people just find the plugs hiding up under the bumper somewhere - not sure on that (i dont have an LX). ive read of numerous people doing it (Mustang5L5 recently helped someone do it; i might search his posts for that thread).

once you find the harness and OEM plugs (if they are there), i would modify/cut/solder them as needed to accomodate your new lights. i put aftermarket lights on my GT - i cut the OEM plugs and used weathertight connectors (spade terminals or bullets work well) to adapt the wires to the new lights. seal the connections really well and tie them up out of harms way. no biggie.

i would also really recommend using a SPDT relay on your lights. it will relieve most of the burden on the switches and wiring up to the relay and also get a smidge more light to the ground. if unfamiliar with how to wire a relay, post away and i or others will lay it out. :)

another thing - if you do have to drill a hole in the firewall, i would cut one for a large grommet. i dont know about you guys, but i like to have 'room to grow'. that way you have room to put more wiring through the firewall as mods come. you can still use a dab of silicone like Hllon suggested (great advice for inclement climates) - i dont since i live in the desert. i would wrap the wires in electrical tape and then use the RTV or whatever product you choose. it hopefully would not stick 'too good' to the electrical tape and come off in the future if you add wires. Hllon might have more info for you on that.

all i can think of for now. good luck.
