aftermarket ingnition

what exactly does an aftermarket ign do, having problems with my carbed 357w with stock 87 ignition setup in a 95v6, now my car will not start, getting no power to the ign module, I only use one wire coming from the car to the ign. module. How exactly does a aftermarket ignition work, like an msd?I dont wanna use any of the cars ignition setup, if I have a msd, will I still need any of the cars ignition stuff.

it depends how much of that company's stuff you use; i am a assuming you mean an ignition box.

the signal for spark needs to be there for either ignition set up to work. most boxes simply amplify the spark, and CD boxes will shoot the spark more than once per firing.

i would hunt down your issues before adding more variables. have you gone through and troubleshot the TFI and PIP (where i would look first)?

First poblem I see is that you say carbed setup. And your tring to use a EFI ign Harness. I am not sure of this but I don't think you can use the 2 of them together. Not sure if I am correct someone will correct me if I am wrong. But all I can do is give you this. Maybe this might help you

How would I check the TFI and PIP, the only thing I did was chase the wire to the wire harness, (passenger side firewall) ran a brand new wire from there to the ign module, no power, do I really need the stock computer, dont really need accessories because I only want to take it to the track, is there another way to get spark to the ign module? thanx in advance.

yes, you need an EFI puter for the ignition to work. i dont recall how it works exactly, but the PIP sends a pulse through the TFI, then it goes to the puter, then back to the TFI for modification (guys, correct me if im wrong - but it is something like that). point is, as far as i know, you need the puter. the alternative is to go with a mech advance set up (if going carb AND ditching all the puter controlled stuff).

as far as rigging it up inbetween those two, im not the one to ask.

hate to sound stupid, mech advance seems good to me, how is this done?

not stupid at all - i am the first to admit im not the best one to ask when it comes to swapping this stuff for an old school set up.

a completely different dizzy (mechanical advance) would be likely required.

i dont know all the ins and outs of converting to a carb from EFI. there have been quite a few threads (and others whom have done it) in the past (if interested in searching). there is a bit that goes into 'uncomputerizing' the engine management.

thax guys for the help, called summit and they have an independant setup, a ign module and dist. for around 459.00, it totally bypasses the stock computer and is made for carbs.
