Aftermarket stereo pics/suggestions

I'm thinking about getting a new Head Unit and I'm wondering what suggestions some of you guys have. I'd want something quality, with ipod/sat radio capabilities, and it'd have to fit in the gaping hole left by the 460 head unit. Pics would be appreciated.

I just upgraded mine the other day with a Pioneer Premier DEH-P390MP. The sound difference is amazing I am a huge Pioneer fan because no other brand has the quality and features for the price. I am a pro installer for a number of years and the shop I worked for did Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion and Pioneer and every time the Pioneers sounded the best. The deck I just got can control I-pod, XM or Serius radio, plays MP-3, has a 16 charecter display, wireless remote, quasy parametric eq, x-overs and a whole lotta other features. The neat thing is the ability to bridge its internal amp to drive small subwoofers. The deck is only $130 and if you buy it from crutchfield it will come with the wire harness and a pocket to fill the lower hole. I ran new speaker wires to the doors and rear because I have 6x8 components in the front and if you go through the factory amps you loose the power of the pioneer (which is greater than the stock amps) and the factory x-overs send 300hz and down to the 6x8 and 300hz and up to the factory tweeters so the sound would suck if you put in new speakers too. I ran new speaker wires to the rear factory 6x8 "subs" from the new deck and bridged its amp to drive them. The bass is way more solid than stock and now that my door speakers can get the full frequency they sound a 100X better

rockford fitted subwoofer box (super light)

i swapped the 02 dual din opening to the 99-01 (dual single) so that i wouldnt need an ugly dash kit

Where did you get that Rockford box? IDK they made one for our cars.

I have the Kenwood Excelon DPX-701 and I freakin' love it. It says that it doesn't fit or work in a Mustang, but I had no problem at all installing it. I have an 8 gig usb key full of music that hasn't left the car since I bought the head unit. It's plenty of music. I can plug in any usb device that reads as a removable mass storage device and play music from it, such as my cell phone, some mp3 players, and external hard drive enclosures. It's pretty cool. It also has a built-in G-analyzer that tells you how much G-force you are making on acceleration, deceleration, and cornering, and it gives you an estimated horsepower rating and quarter mile time. It also has a stopwatch that starts when you start moving, and a bunch of other gimmicky gadgets that I haven't used since I installed it It fills the double din hole quite nicely. I'll get a few pictures up for you tomorrow.

okay imma have to whore out my stereo again lol.

anyways, i just replaced the backseat with stereo equipment so no one can sit back there and lower the car even further into side skirt scraping land.

for what I did, i have a mono amp for the subwoofer, a 4 channel amp for all speakers in the car and a capacitor connected to both amps to provide extra power and decrease strain on the electrical system.

I also have a turbo-timer (not necessarily for turbo) since it can display voltages in real-time to see if my electrical system is getting strained/worn out (placed above the head unit)

suede-covered wooden boards get placed in

suede-covered wooden box around the stereo equipment

added blue lights under the box for extra bling factor

I like the new Pioneer Premiers or the higher end Alpines if you can afford one. I have a Pioneer Elite DEH-P980BT, and its awesome. It even has a built in Tach, kinda cool feature. With 2 JL Audio 12 inch W3v3 speakers, and a powerful hifonics amp. I kept the factory mids and highs for them to keep the stock look. Keeps people out of your car.

I can't see mounting the amps in the open like that. Thats just asking to get broken into. I suggest if you dont like the install kits for the Mustang, as most are really junk, get a double din. They fit perfectly with no fab work at all. I just put one in my car. An Eclispe unit with a removable TOMTOM built in, literally docks to the face of the unit, full IPOD control reads instantly and finds songs really fast, Sat radio and bluetooth hands free built in. It also has a front USB port for a thumb drive.
5 volt preouts is really nice. Also it can be had for less then 400 bucks. I bought mine used on ebay. Since it uses Tomtom, you can update the maps for alot less money.

Its late, but I will post pictures tommorow. The deck fits is very good and goes well with the stock interior. I had a few pioneers in the past, the blue really turns me off. This just has a few red lite buttons and thats about it.

I pretty much drive to and from work so nav isn't really a priority. Subs are a big no-no since I use my trunk to carry equipment and I've got a baby seat in back. Basically I'm thinking new HU, speakers, wires, maybe some amps that'd go in the stock locations....

I don't use the NAV that much either. But in its price range no other deck offers the touch screen control of the ipod or any other souce as well we this deck does. Far easier to look though your ipod then to say a Pioneer or alpine witht the small screen.

i have the older version of that unit (although not the premier) the DEH-P7800mp, and my G/F also has the premier 980BT. they are both solid units and i highly recommend them.

is that a direct swap? cause i know on my 94 it had to screw in, not snap in like my 04. i hate the dash kit with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns! it looks cheap, it feels cheap and i dont have that sweet pocket under my deck anymore. although i only want it until i can afford a double din deck with a sweet screen

where did you get yours and how much?

pretty much a direct swap, and if you get a 99-01 the colors will match up. 94-98 the colors are a bit different but they can be easily painted

it was pretty cheap, i dont remember if i got it off ebay or corral

That's a nice looking deck, I'm sure some will think it's ugly though. I would have looked at that for my jeep if I didn't just get a stand alone tomtom.

I'm actually looking at the Pioneer DVIC or whatever. The 2 DIN one with the big touch screen. Could I theoretically install that into the factory setup and call it a day or would I have to get an amp/speakers? Would there be an amp that could be tucked up in the stock location?

Yeah that can interface with the stock amps just fine. Just get the wire harness installation kit fron Scosche, its only 12-15 bucks. You wont have to cut any factory wires and the kits wires colors match the aftermarkets decks wires so its duck soup to install

Here is the Eclispe installed in the Mustang. IMO, it fits very well. I didn't have to fab anything and bolted it right now. Best of all, its only $380 on ebay.

That actually looks pretty good, jp. Does it display the ipod info on the big screen? How is the interface between the unit and an ipod?
