Aftermarket Temp gauge

My son drag races the GT. We notice that his et's are not always consistent. I believe one reason is that the car is not at the same temperature for each run. It is hard to tell with the factory temp guage. I would like to add an aftermarket temp guage, probably an electric AutoMeter. Where is the factory sending unit, and can I tie the aftermarket guage into it? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

You can't tie into the factory sending unit the voltage won't be the same as the one for the guage. There is a drain plug in the drivers side of the block that you can put the guage sending unit in.

Better yet get something to datalog. It will tell you much more than just ECT.

I drilled and tapped a hole in the side of the thermostat housing. Much more accurate than the block drain as that location typically runs hotter than the rest of the engine. And with it mounted in the housing I can see when the thermostat is actually opening and closing.

I have a mechanical water temp gauge. I mounted it in the block drain and it works fine, i have noticed that sometimes it takes a few minutes to get a reading but it seems accurate.

Heres a picture of where i have mine mounted

This is true. My guage typically runs about 10 to 15 degrees hotter than what the eec reads.

That's were mine was originally mounted before moving it to the thermostat housing. Due to poor coolant flow to the rear drivers side cylinders they run hotter than the other 6 cylinders my gauge used to run at 230 degrees in the summer when I moved the sensor the gauge read 210.

Those cylinders run hotter because there is no rear crossover like in 5.0 intakes.

Hi Deftsound, i did a search for a "mechanical temp gauge" and i saw that you have one.
I can't install it near termostat, because the sensor is too long... so i will go to the block, but I have some questions:

1. Did you install an "Autometer" mechanical temp gauge?
2. Did you use the 2275 Autometer adapter only?
3. I can't see the instalation photo in this post, can you send it to alfredo.cobos@argentina.com ?
