Ok im a 19 year old college student. I hope to be settled into my career (firefighter/paramedic) by latest 22 years old. I think Ive set my mind on selling my stang. I want to be able to have a good downpayment on a house when I get a job and with insurance, gas, dying need to want to mod the car, etc it just is hard. Things seem to make sense now. Before I was like, I want this and that and all of a sudden I thought, why the hell don't I just save my money? Why do I need this crap right now? Im 19 and sure it is fun to drive but its eating away at the pockets. I figure save more now and I'll have nicer things later. I will most definetly own a stang in the future but for now I think we are gonna be parting ways. What do you guys think? whos gonna be the first one to say screw that KB that b****! haha

Yeah that’s what I said. I'm 24 make around 50,000 a year and still seem to wonder where my money went (oh wait now I know, it goes to pleasing my girl friend ). I tell my self the same thing but then I end up saying I just need to finish this to make my car just right. I'm probably not going to get anything for my car until the spring but I want springs, new rims tires, dyno tune and to finish my exterior mods. I tell my self I won’t get a super charger or cams and to be happy with what I have. At least my car will be paid off in three more months.

Funny, I kind of see it the other way around. I'm 21, and I see this as my only chance in life to have a fast car and be able to afford mods. Later on down the road, I'm sure a family will come around, and it just isn't pratical anymore to have a 2 door sports car. My plan was to have fun with a sports car while I'm still young, and single, with an expendable income.

I think everyone settles down and starts to think like you at some point. Usually though not at 19! That's the age where guys start thinking "Hey, i got some money now..let me buy a chick-magnet car and blow my cash on useless material objects"

I didn't start thinking about the whole "save my money for property" thing til i was 24-25ish. Luckly my two stangs are paid off, so i really do not need to sell them...i just haven't bought a mod for them in about 2 years.

You are still young though. Try and have some fun though while you are young.

I've been saving my money for college (and living expenses during college) for about 5 years. I've used about 10% of the money that woulda went to savings on my car. It's been hard though looking at my checking account and seeing i could buy a 2.2KB + intercooler + heads + cams + tune , but screw huge college debts.

Yes it is. Beleive me i know. But then i see friends out there blowing their money on brand new $50K truck/SUV's and putting 24" wheels on it and having everyone think they are loaded or something....and they really live at home with their parents

Your priorities change as you get older..some earlier than others. Doesn't mean you have to totally abandon your hobbies though, you just don't throw as much money at them as you would like to.

hell, after the football game i'm watching is over...i'm off to home depot to buy interior paint to paint my living room and then look around for a rug for it Man i hate getting old

you should see of of the younger guys (I'm 27) I'm deployed with right now. They're blowing money like no tomorrow on new cars and other crap. I pocketed quite a good chunk of change from this deployment, but my mindset is due to me leaving the Army when I get back. I've seen one kid but a loaded 300C while he was out here!

Yeah, I look back at buying my 02 and wish I would have kept my fox. I have a car payment now but with the fox I didnt and the money I use on the car now monthly could've went to some nice mods on the fox. But it didnt have a/c and needed alot of work for me to behappy with it. this is a project that is always done that I can add stuff to. If I had to do it over again I probably would have kept the fox.

As a fellow first responder.
I highly, highly, highly, suggest holding off on a house of your own until you are out of the Academy and off probation!
Seriously!
Maybe even a little longer.
The life of a first responder is very hectic and your schedule is always changing especially while you are the roookie.
I am 2 years deep now and off probation and am just starting to think of getting my own house.
It's so much easier if something goes wrong with the house.
You don't want to be missing days or time out of the academy for any reason.
I work a 4 day on 3 days off (always consecutive) and I find myself wondering where my weekend went many times.

Another suggestion if the Mustang is paid off. Don't sell it

Actually, you'll have more responsibilities in the future. A wife, kid(s), and a home mean less money for you. Now is the time to spend your money, because it's more expendable. Spend your money now while you can, before your paying bills up the arse. I mean, don't be stupid with your money (save a little), but your too young to be thinking about a house etc.

Probation is usually like one year. and what do you mean by academy? Im going to a Fire "academy" to get my firefighter II certification which is only like 6 weeks long but other than being in the process of getting my paramedics license now, that is all I will be doing.. I cant be hired on till im 21 anyway, and I almost certainly have a fairly sweet deal set for me as long as I meat the requirments and pass the tests. (I will be working 1 day on 2 days off) I will have a fulltime job around 21. Thats why I meant I would be "settled in" around 22, if all goes well. Quite Frankly I just need to get out of the parents house. I have never wanted to be at home past that age. I have brothers/sisters who are much older and still live at home and I dont want to even think about that. I just need to get out on my own, ya know (Maybe an aparment/condo to start). Dont get me wrong Im not gonna drive a 95 honda civic until im 30, I just think this might be the best for me right now to get where I want to be.

Oh And trust me my wife will understand that I will have a stang, or else she wont be my wife. lol

Yeah, i have friends like that.

I'm only 26, so still young, but getting to the point where i need to think about the future.

Right now i just want to go to the infiniti dealership, trade my Mustang in plus some more $$ on a DP on a new 2008 G37 coupe.

But the sensible side of me says to just keep the car that i have because it's paid off and use that $500/month i would be paying and just sock it away in the bank.

Fortunately for me i've been listening to my sensible side

Ahh I see they run things a little differently there. But our Firefighter and Pramedics go to the Fire Academy which is 48 weeks long I believe. But you need not have any certifications it is all done by the city.

So you are one step closr in a way. But I would highly suggest waiting until off Probation. Probation is without cause release. Meaning you can be fired for any or no reason at anytime during probation.
Just a thought to remember if you get yourself in a mortgate and then you don't have a job.
But let a alone you will be swamped and if things go wrong it's all on your shoulders to either fix it or get it fixed.
Much easier to drop it on the land lord than take a day of work.

As for your wife comment I have heard many comments like that before. I lost a brother to his wife that he swore up and down wouldn't change him.
But guess what.

Yeah I wouldnt get into a mortgage when IM a probie but I afterwards I would definetly be looking around. I know what you mean about the wife. I have had same situations alone with guys and girlfriends. I have a girlfriend now but she likes mustangs probably just as much as I do, so I really don't think Ill have a problem. (not saying she will be my wife, but you know what I mean)

What state are you certified in? We're looking for firefighter medics like they're going out of style.

http://www.stpete.org/fire/index.htm

of course you should also be aware of...
