Air filter fell out of the fenderwell......

Lets see, I changed the filter about 3 months ago, it was on pretty tight, but the entire CAI never really fit right, I always had to fight it to get it to sit right so it didnt rub anything. But hey, I wasnt complaining, I picked it up at a local car wash for $20 bucks. I think it was hotter than ****, but how are they going to track it.

I grabbed a sock and massaged it over the flattened air filter. I did the best I could to get it back halfway in shape before I stuck the sock over it. Then I went to NAPA and bought a cheapie from them.

I really had never thought about it just falling out, but now, every time I hit a bump, I will probably look for the extra THUMP of the damn filter falling out under my tire......

THX for the input btw :hail2:

Thats what teh heat shield is for :D.
The ones in the fenderwell have never been proven to actually make any power....too many bends in front of the MAF sensor and can jack up the A/F at various RPMs.

Mine has a ram air setup that blows fresh air RIGHT on the filter...every few months when I remove the filter, the side thats facing the ramair thing is COMPLETELY BLACK with bugs and crap :rlaugh:. TONS of stuff comes out when I beat on the filter lol. So, the only time its sucking up any remotely hot air is at the staging line :D.

My ram air works so well infact that removing the headlight did ZERO for trap 103.05 vs 103.05 last time I did it....and the headlight hole leads right into the open end velocity stack thing on the end of the fliter. :nice: Now if you didnt do what I did then maybe it would it would suck up hot air all the time  .

Well, Im reviving this dead thread with an update. I went and got a new filter, a K&N, from NAPA right after this happened. I noticed that it ran like a$$ after I put the filter on. It was extremly sluggish at low RPMs, RPMs bounced between 500-800 when idling and almost sounded like a misfire, but not as frequent. I was beating my head against the wall :bang: . I swapped sparkplugs, tested COPs, did everything I could think of. Last week, I was on vacation, and found a guy that was selling a new MAC straight shot. I bought it for $150 just because I hated the bends in the BBK before the MAF. I installed it today, and WTF, it fixed everything. It idles fine, it runs great, and no hesitation. My a$$ dyno is very pleased ATM.

Any thoughts on why a damn K&N caused this? Does it have to do with the A/F with the K&N or what. I had only heard good things about K&N so that is why I was shocked.

I think it was actually letting your car breath, and the extra CFM of air was actually causing the pile up of air in the bend and was screwing up your MAF readings. K&N is the best IMHO :nice: . But glad you got it fixed....I dont like fendewell CAIs for that EXACT reason, otherwise they are great for getting cool air.

You probably didnt tighten EVERYTHING tightly. Last time i didnt my car would just die. I didnt notice until i actually retightened everything. And maybe the only reason it worked with the new one is because you actually installed it correctly???

I thought of that, but then again, I removed it 5 or 6 times when I was testing COPs and replacing plugs. So, if I didnt tighten it right the first time, I had to get it right one of the other times.:D
