On my 88 stang, I want to remove the air intake silencer. It looked like I could just replace it with a section of plastic tube, but after looking at it, the throttle body end of the silencer seems to have a bigger diameter than the airbox end. Has anyone else replaced/deleted the silencer? How did you do it? THe silencer itself looks pretty restrictive and I would imagine getting rid of it would help things a little bit.

You can put a piece of PVC pipe there, just cut the rubber piece down so its the right size (or at least thats what I did for my CAI)

What diameter of PVC pipe works? Can I get away with not cutting the upper rubber flex curve? How would you cut it so air wouldn't leak in?

I have a 3" metal CAI, if you don't want to cut the rubber connection then just use a clamp over the area that has the right detention, it will look stupid but it will work.

If you want to trim it then do the same thing only use a pen to make where you have to cut, and cut.

Looking at the inside of the silencer, I wonder how hard it would be to gut it out a bit. I suppose I could use my Dremel to hack it out. Then I would still have the stock look and fitment. I can see how to cut and insert a PVC section, but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the vehicle, and if I do sell it, I would want to have it all stock so I'd like to not cut the rubber bends if I don't have to. I may go to the junkyard and snag another silencer and play with it to see what I can do with it.

i went to autozone and got a 3in diameter peice of exhaust pipe. i think it was 16 or 18 inches long, it needs to be trimmed a couple of inches. One end of it is flared, that part goes into the elbow that connects to the throttlebody...just tighten down the clamp until the pipe cant be pulled out of the elbow and youll be good...ill take some pics tomorrow of it

It isn't. I cut the baffle out of mine with a knife when I had my car.

I'd like to see that setup with the 3" exhaust pipe. If I can get away with not cutting any of the factory parts and just inserting a piece of pipe in there, that's even better.

Not bad looking. I still have my stock airbox though (I put a K&N filter in it and removed the air inlet restrictor). With using the exhaust piping, I would be able to paint it too.

ok, it's a TC motor so i dont know how different it'd be... but anyways, the intake on it had one of those boxes underneath the filter with some rotating door type deals and if i remember right, it had something i unplugged. if i put that into a mustang(87-89), would i need to retrofit something into an exhaust pipe intake?

There is a coating on the inside and outside of exhaust piping so make sure to take it all off with a rag before you paint and install it

*Note smart a$$ comment*

You don't have to worry about stuff like that on a turbo motor.

Don't be a hater. I just had my car towed home because I lost all of my oil and a rod started knocking. I don't know what the hell happened, added two quarts and it's pouring out the rear somewhere. I'm going to drink a lot of beer now.

Picture

Crappy cellphone pic of 3" exhaust pipe used in place of the silencer...i didnt have time to take it apart but you get the idea. If i want to in the future i could make a couple of brakets to mount it, and have a cone filter on the end

That one is perfect. So the flared end of the pipe goes in the top rubber elbow then? Looks good (as do the rest), it's paintable, no cutting is involved, and the silencer can be slid right back in! I'll have to remeber to clean the pipe real good before installation. How restrictive are the silencers? Has anyone noticed a difference after removal?

Yep the flared end goes into the top rubber elbow. I noticed a little bit of a difference, mainly a little more torque, and it was in fact louder w/o the silencer, but ive gotten used to it now, so maybe its time for a ranger header

Now I'm pretty much hijacking my own thread, but this thread has raised a few more questions about quick engine modifications. So:

1. Does the roller cam work with the speed-density system. I know the duration and lift are different and tend to create an intake air fluctuation. I also know that speed-density systems do not like this type of fluctuation. Does the roller cam work and what will it do for my power/fuel economy? I have one in the capri, but that's carburetted so I don't have to worry about computers.
2. Is the EGR tube connection the same on the cast monifolds as on the ranger header? Or is there bending and adapting to do? What about the header to pipe connection?
