I just did a search for 4.6 and air silencer but came up with nothing. Do our mustangs have air silencers on them? One member on another thread said the 5.0 tech manual says they pull 5-7 hp. If we have them , does anyone have any pics of them, or instructions how to get rid of it?

edit:
I just read the air silencer removal article at
http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/intke.htm

However it doesn't say for our 05-06. I don't know if that is because ours don't have them or not though. Alsonot to sound lazy but I guess I could go out there and pull apart my air intake tub and just look but I would rather get some guidanc here first anyway. (Maybe it lokos different is in a different place, etc. the write of the above article said he couldnt tell much difference fromk removing the air silencer from his 5.0 or v6 but removing it from the 4.6 was like putting in a chip.

And finally, if our 4.6s are like the ones in the article, then we don't need to cut into the fender well for CAI, corect? it looks like the hole is already there

forget everything you just read in that article. they are for the old chassis. the new chassis is completely different. the intake goes to the drivers side. SOME early 05s had a hydrocarbon trap, that if removed, would free up about 2 rwhp. ford stopped using them early in the production run.

CAIs for the S197 dont go into the fenderwell, like they did in years past.

The 05 and 06 Mustangs do not have air silencers, compared to the 4.6 that were in the 96-04 models, However I believe what you may be referring to is what's know as the Hydrocarbon Trap, also know as the Pre cataylist filter. If you're Mustang was built prior to either April or May of 05..chances are yours has one.. If on the other hand, yours was built anytime after May of 05 then it doesn't..Ford discontinued installing these devices, in mid year of 05 altogether.. If yours does have one, its located inside the rubber air intake tube, just before the plastic MAF housing, and it will look something like those air tornado devices, that you see advertized on TV which claim saves fuel economy, but in reality, it really looks more like a metal honeycombed disc. If yours has one, and you wish to remove it.. just disconnect you're intake tube from the plastic MAF housing and throttle body, using a normal flat head screwdriver and a 10MM. socket to remove the upper bolt, securing the top portion of the filter box area, but make sure that you push the red tab back, on the MAF clip before removing the MAF sensor plug, otherwise you will end up braking the clip..Then take a pair of needlenose pliers, and begin removing the trap by placing the pliers around each section, of the outer edges, work around each section at a time, and you should be able to gradually remove it, with no problem.. and you should also notice a 3-5 HP. increase, as well.. Anyway, hope this answers you're questions.. Good Luck :nice:
