Am I hurting my motor by shifting at 6k?

So am I? I mean the car pulls all the way to that range, at least I feel it pulling. I went to the dyno when it was an auto and at 5400 rpm, the curve was still climbing but since it would hit the limiter, it would fall flat after that. I haven't taken it lately tho and don't have the money to do so, I just wanted to ask cause it gets up there pretty quick that I think it's a good rpm to shift at, but I may be wrong.:SNSign:

Well, I still have the stock intake, heads and cam so mine lacks serious balls past 5400 or so. Normally I shift it at or before 5500. I don't think I've ever rev'ed it to 6k to be honest. I'd say if it still feels like its pulling nicely up to 6k, do it. I wouldn't push it much past that though if its the stock short-block, especially if its on a regular basis.
I don't normally street race, but the couple times I have in the past I had much better luck shifting at 5k.

After i did my edel performer bakc in the day i shifted at 6k and ran my best times there. I always went to 6k and the car had 130k on it and it still ran hard.

Stock OEM shortblocks ...... don't got.

I've had countless various versions of oem stock sbf motors from 221 to 302 cubic inches.

6 grand ani't gonna hurt any of the late 5.0 motors ... as long as everthing is up to snuff ... AND ... your high rpm antics are quick bursts AND it is only an occasional kind of thing.

Hope you understand what I'm trying to say here

Heck, before we got these new fangled, heavy as hell roller lifters ...

Me and my gear-head buds used to take our stock oem 260's & 289's to 7K plus ............... EVERY weekend

None of em ever blew up

I'd agree with Grady. It seems to me that motor stress goes up to the square of RPM. A little more revs = a lot more stress.

As was said, people beat the snot out of their mills all the time. But if there's an issue, you might find out about it pretty quick.

So Grady, you're saying I'm fine? Got a lil lost in the post. I don't do it very often, and it's only a once in a while thing. I let Paul(punisher) drive it and he drove it like it wasn't his. He floored it and let it go up to 7k. I was scared for my motor so I asked him to look at the rpms and not let it go that far. He just smiled and floored. EL VATOOOO.

Hissin, I know it's best to go to the dyno, but for now, I should be fine. I can say that I only floor it on Thursday nights which is my mustang night. Go out and cruise and whatever, and it's never more than 3 times in one night.

I am one who thinks that an occasional romp to redline is ok, esp if you've done it before and recently (if it hasnt been done recently, I'd worry a bit). I'd also note that the stock tach is often off by a percentage, and at redline, you can be reading hundreds of RPM higher than what you're really at.

I would want to try to keep from smacking the limiter - it doesnt sound like you are anyhow. That goes for you motorcycle guys too. I once hit the limiter in 3rd with a passenger and almost air mailed the passenger over my shoulder when the bike kicked.

I actually don't think I have a rev limiter. My car is running great. I cleaned out PIP and switched out the wires and my power is back. Now that I've got it runnin properly, I want to make it pretty. I'll be installing the a9l pretty soon. I just wanted to make it run good with the t4m0 before I switched over. That way if any problem come up, it'll have something to do with the swap.

Yes a little more rpm's should not hurt you IMHO

As you have pointed out ... you now got some stuff that makes it practical to go a bit higher

As always ... JT has a good point to bring up
about the stock tach

Mine reads about 3 to 400 higher than it should

You may not be twisting it as much as you think you are

I usually shift mine around 6200 ... if I wanna push it.

I feel pretty comfortable with my AFR springs, Scorpion stud rockers and what not so ............ I ain't skeared

I think I'm ok too. I've got the crane springs with with the comp cam rockers. I just need to get the 6.3000 pushrods to get rid of the rocker noise and I'll be very happy.

I wasn't sure how close to stock you were - with an H/C/I (as it sounds like you have), I retract/modify my statement about pushing things. I actually had a stock top-end in mind when speakin about my reluctance to push the revs too much. I think you have the goods to take the abuse (just as if I had Grady's nice combo and tuning ability [the only pinging he ever hears are quarters in his pocket hitting eachother], I'd wind the snot out of it).

My bad on not knowing what you're runnin.

my car feels like it pulls to 6k, but it feels better if i shift before that. i ran the time in my sig shifting at 5k. i have not had it on the dyno so i cant say for sure what its really doing.

Damn Greg, our combos are very much alike. The differences are that I have 4.10s and l/t. I even have the p/c as the mid pipe. Good to know what times I should expect. Thanks
