Am i running to Cool?

i have a 195* t-stat that i tested and it works fine. I noticed that my stock gauge shows only 1/3 way up so i am wondering if i'm running to cool. I can hold my hand on the upper rad hose with out burning myself. I put a probe in the radiator and it only reads 135*. The stock gauges suck, but i'm just wondering if i should be able to hold the upper rad hose?

Is there even a problem with running to cool? I'd rather run a little cool than over heat all the time?
Whats the down sides to running cool?

If you are overheating, about what temp should you start pulling over and cutting your car off?

running cool will wear out bearings and cylinder walls quicker and cause the oil the sludge over time. just think if the motor never gets hot the condensation that gets in your oil never has a chance to evaporate. just learned about that stuff today at NTI

so whats an optimal temp?

My AutoMeter gauge reads right around 195-200*

thats fine. as far as running cooler...its good if you need the extra protection from detonation. people running power adders use lower tstats so that they dont have to worry about detonation as much. the thermostat and cooling system was designed to keep the car in a desired operating temperature range, not keep it from overheating. so if the car has a problem with overheating, putting a lower tstat might help but its just a bandaid fix

The optimal water temps for performance vs engine efficiency are very different. Also, compared to carbed stuff, these cars run warm in almost any state of tune, so I wouldnt worry about the increased wear issues too much (non-puter controlled carbed stuff can run super cool and super rich, or with stoichiometry all over the board across the entire range, and it still holds up alright).

FWIW, my stock temp gauge reads ~35*F too cool (all cars seem to be different too. ).

Simply stated, the stat is regulating temps. The stat opens/closes around its rating and the gauge sender, being in a different location than the stat, can indicate a higher or lower (generally lower) operating temp.

yeah, i didnt think too much about older cars. they can run a lot cooler than newer cars.

Well I just put a new radiator, Tstat and hoses on. So I figured I would ask.

I put a 195* TStat on so I guess 200* aint bad.
Sounds alright to me. You could have some residual air trapped, etc, that is still purging (that can elevate temps a little).
The parts store stats are known for not opening when they should (esp at high RPM's, like Auto X'ing) which is where a balanced stat really helps out.

I wouldnt worry. Enjoy and good luck with the other fixes you are doing. :nice:

Being that the average temp here in Northern VA this time of year is 40* and below, will my engine temp get alot hotter during the summer when its 90*+?

As for the other fixes, everything is going great. Just wish I had some more $$ to fix a few other issues.

WIth a 195*F stat, it is hard to run below that once the motor is up to temp.

As far as summer goes, it will largely depend upon how well the coil can reject heat. If running a little warm, a 180 stat in the summer can help.

Glad to hear the other stuff is comin along. :nice:

Those are exactly the temps I am running now.

I do not plan on changing the stat in the summer. If anything I will be upgrading to an e- fan, or switching back to a 3-core Cu radiator.
Basically the cooling system components should be able to maintain the temp of the T-stat, if not then there is an issue that needs to be addressed.

My thoughts
