I've searched and read on how to do it with the 460 system. I've got an 03 (Coupe) w/out the 460. Is it possible to hook up an amp and subs to the stock head unit? Does the process work pretty much the same as the 460 set up or is it completely different?

You have the Base Cd player right?
If so that's the same as I have.
There are a few ways to do it but if just getting some subs to hit is what your after.
Option 1. Buy and Amp with highlevel inputs. tap into the speaker wiring on the rear speakers. Fold seats down lay down from inside car and it's right there in your face. Then hook up amp and subs like normal.
Option 2 Buy a highlevel to low level convertor. Tap into speaker wiring either at deck or rear speakers again. run RCA's to amp hook amp up and subs up like normal.

Hope that helps Also might want to post in the sound shop there are LOTS more knowledgeable people over there. I've been outta it for a few now.

why not just buy a new aftermarket headunit, they are cheap $100-200
I've got all the stuff to proceed now including a head unit. I'm gonna leave the head unit in my 86 and move my amp and subs to the 03. Later

Thanks for the info BooWFO

ah ok, all you need now is a Line-Out Convertor (around $20) just splice it into the rear speaker lines and hook up the amp to it. pictured to the left (black box) is the line out convertor, hooked up to the rear speaker lines

Umm yes it does hence the big heatsink on the top it is to draw the heat away from the circuit board. but then again I'm an idiot only did custom installs for 5 years, and slept through most of my electronics classes.

heat generates to the heatsink no matter how it's mounted, it's still going to draw everywhere, if it mattered alot then alot of pcs would go to chit because the processers are sideways and so are the heatsinks, as long as the heatsinks are there and the unit is ventilated there shouldn't be a problem, well that and how crappy the amp is makes the difference

Very true. It was just a myth about mounting amps upside down being a huge problem. I've done quite a few installs in a million different configurations, and when everything is done right, it doesn't matter how you mount them, as long as there is some room around them for air movement. I've had amps under seats before, and that was the only problem I ever had with air movement. If I had a few pc fans blowing over it, I'm sure it would have been fine.
