AmSoil 0w-30?

I got a catalogue in the mail from Amsoil oils. They have a 0w-30 weight synthetic oil that is suggested for vehicles that normally take 5w-20 or 5w-30 weight oils. Is this safe? It's expensive so it's gotta be good, right? I currently use Castrol Syntec. I was thinking about paying the money and trying amsoil out, but not if it causes wear by being too thin at startup.

Right now, I'm using Mobil 1 0w-20 w/ Mobil 1 oil filter and no problems. I will be switching to Amsoil soon. Amsoil from what I've read is about the best. They beat Mobil 1 in certain friction tests and what I like about them is all their oil comes from here in the USA. No dependency on foreign countries for their oil.

You can use 0w-30 without any worries. Many guys in the 4.6ltr Mustangs like ours are using 0w-30 weight oils. I will be going to Amsoil HP 5w-30 in my Mustang at the next oil change. I'm getting mine through an authroized dealer off the net. I would be using 0w-30 but its a bit expensive for my tastes. That, and I have to change my oil every 5k miles for the warranty.

Amsoil is the stuff to use. Hell I USED to be a dealer but I now live in the UK and cant get it.
I am now using 0w-40 that Mobile 1 makes.
So far so good.
I am still sticking with the 1 change a year with a filter change at 6 months.

Very bad Ideal to change your oil once a year.

Wear on the engine is due to impurities in the oil, not thermal breakdown.

CONSUMER REPORTS:It is better to change your oil and filter more often, than to use expensive motor oils and prolong oil changes.

He stated he changes the filter every 6 months. If he's using a synthetic filter, he is completely fine.

what synthetic filter would he use.. I use motorcraft's filter with my synthetic Mobile 1 and will be using it with amsoil 5w-20.. thats ok right.. i've never heard of a synthetic filter?

I know both Mobil 1 and Amsoil make synthetic filters. The fibers inside are synthetic and capture more dirt and metal particles than the standard filters.

Like to tell me how I'm "wrong"? Have you ever used a synthetic oil filter or synthetic oil ?

why the f.. do you want to pay for 0-30 unless you have a diesel and live in alaska.

0 is for the oil to be liquid in cold temperature
30 is for hot temperature so it will be a bit tiker than 5-20 when the engine is hot, but i don't think it's wort the price of it.

If you change your oil every 3-5k miles, you're right, its not worth the extra cost. However, if you go for extended periods of time without changing your oil, then it would be worth it in a high performance vehicle. 0w-30 is more ideal for race engines as it flows like liquid at start and provides thicker protection at high temperatures than the standard 5w-30.

Riiiiiiight... I can thing of many counterexamples:

1) Strippers
2) 20" wheels
3) The Hummer
4) The new BMW 5-series
5) Marriage
6) A Mercedes Roadster
7) 5-star hotels (try getting them to turn on the A/C before July)

You get the picture.

More to the point, I think the best approach is to use the regular Motorcraft stuff and replace the oil/filter often. Believe me, metal floating around in your crankcase will ruin an engine faster than "thermal breakdown." To a certain extent, "thermal breakdown" is something Castrol invented to sell their product. And I agree that cold-start fluidity is important, but 5W20 is already very light. You don't need zero-weight oil (whatever that is) in your crankcase.

Since its metal that ruins the motor, why not get an oil filter magnet? I got one and I've checked my oil recently. Funny thing is theres no sign or trace of any metal whatsoever in the oil..

Where'd you get that magnet? Did you just improvise something?

I got mine at a local performance shop. It wraps half way around the oil filter and its pretty strong on its pull. It was expensive too. 42 bucks, but it is reusable and will last the life of the car.
