Anderson Powerpipe & Steeda Timing Adjuster Installed...impressions and questions

Today I had a Steeda Timing Adjuster and an Anderson Powerpipe Intake installed along with a K&N air filter. The Anderson pipe is supposedly one of the best becuase it is ceramic coated and doesnt have any real "restrictive" bends. I don't know why they call it a powerpipe since its actually a cold air intake, but whatever.

I told the guy to set the t/a at 14 degrees, but he said he didn't feel comfortable setting it past 13, so we set it at that.

Impressions:
Partial Throttle Power - I noticed a little bit more snap in initial throttle response around ~2200rpm, but nothing to write home about. Not enough to put a smile on my face, but enough to be noticeable.

Intake Sound - I expected the engine to have a deeper, throatier, suction type sound with the addition of this intake, but to my surprise it sounds EXACTLY the same as it did with the stock intake. Kind of a bummer.

WOT: - I kept my ears peeled for detonation the first few WOT's, and heard none. Power wise, its hard to tell if there has been an increase in power. I can feel it most as im switching gears, it has a bit more snap to it. I am kind of disappointed, though.

On the way home from the gym tonight I took the highway to see how it felt there. I dropped it into 3rd @65mph and took off. It was feeling strong, but again very hard to tell by "butt dyno" the power increase over stock. Heres the weird part....As I approached ~90mph in 4th, I shut it down by putting it in neutral like usual and braking. I noticed the tach dropped to ~0rpm, shot back up to 1000rpm, dropped back to 0rpm, shot up to 1000rpm, then just died on me. What gives? I had to pull into the median and thankfully the car restarted on me. My check engine light has not come on since the install. My guesses were that the pipe got disconnected somewhere, or that a hose slipped off, but if that were the case the car wouldn't start back up like a charm. So my only guess left is that all the extra air flow sent the MAF into a panic and it just shut down the car?

I plan on eventually setting the T/A to 14 degrees. I was shooting for 290rwhp, but I don't know if thats gonna happen anymore. I think I may be calling it quits on the power mods after this, becuase nothing is going to give me the SOTP feeling I want besides a blower or nitrous, and I can't afford a blower and don't want to run nitrous. I had initially thought that becuase these mods were installed in combination, that along with my x-pipe, they would all work together and I would actually feel the power increase. Maybe the ECU needs to adjust to the extra air flow?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

IMHO, if you run 93 octane in it, 14* should be fine......

Also, make sure that all the sensors got hooked back up.

Did, you reset the computer? It may help if you disconnected the battery for about 5-10 minutes, then started it up. That would help the car adjust to the extra flow better.

:stupid:

My SES light came on after I installed the Timing Adjuster. I disconnected to computer for about 30 mins and that solved the problem.

I just assumed the shop did that. The SES light is not on. But would this all explain why my car sputtered and then died after a WOT run?

fr96ss: Are you serious? Is that the general consensis or just your personal experience?

Most GOOD mechanics will tell you that even if you bump it to 14-15 degrees, If you are not using 91 or 93 octane, you will see nothing, the higher timing setting only benefits the performance with more oxygen found in better octane gas..... just my .02.

I have a Cobra so I have always ran 93 Octane, on a regular basis.

The check engine light came on late saturday night as I was coming home from a party. I disconnected the battery yesterday for about 12 minutes, and it has been off ever since. (but I think its too little time to tell yet)

A bad thing is, when I went WOT yesterday and threw it into neutral and brake to slow down, the RPM started surging again, and my check engine light flashed on and off. I had to revv up the car and put it into gear for fear that the car would die. WTF gives??

hmmm, sounds like some MAF crap to me. Is the MAF in the same position as before? did you get the code pulled?

You've heard of Lamotta Performance right? The all mustang shop on 17-92 in longwood? Well, since this pipe and t/a were a birthday gift, my parents went ahead and paid for the install as well, so I let them do it. I haven't actually visually inspected the MAF other than a quick peak when I first picked up the car. I haven't gotten the code pulled yet, becuase the CEL hasn't turned back on yet. I'll get it pulled if it turns back on, which i'm sure it will.

This shop is very knowledgable about mustangs, so i'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt before I take it back to them.

lamotta is a great shop, probably the best mod motor(especially 4v) shop in town. If i were you i would call them up and tell them your difficulties.
