Ok I have been looking and it seems that DSS has some of the best deals and what not. I am going back and forth with the pro bullit block and just a kit.

My question is who has had exp. with DSS as in short blocks, they seem to be a realy good deal. I have been adding up things for both ways (build it myself v. buy the short block) and How do you guys like the short block? Is the quality of assem. look good? look like everything was done right? cyl. finish done to the right rings?

I am leary(sp?) about having a large wholesaler build stuff since I have seen things that just make me say "damn I could have done a way better job than that half azzed attempt and I should have just done it myself".

One of my friends bought a 331 from them and it was great. DSS is probably one of the best big engine builders that I have heard of it. I have actually never heard anything bad about them. I'm going to have them build my engine sometime next year.

coast high performance seems another popular choice for engine building. im probably going to with an x2c short block soon, 2200 bucks for a 331, new block, all forged. doesent seem like you can go wrong with DSS however.

I have heard some bad things about DSS, but I can't remember anything specific. I have no first hand experience with them, though. Just be sure to do your research! I heard that Bennett Racing offers some decent motors.

Im definately goin with DSS when I order my new shortblock. However, even though X2C is a little cheaper, DSS throws in their prolite pistons and a pro windage tray I believe. And I live 30 minutes from them so I can pick it up and not pay shipping.

Shipping is realy somthing thing I wonder about? I mean how/who ships it and I guess I will have to have the picker ready to get it off the truck or at least some kind of dolly. That and the house has kinda a uphill driveway that would kill.

Any web sites for Bennett? or x2c?

x2c is 1000 dollars cheaper, has a new block (dss is used), and forged crank (dss is cast). pretty big difference IMHO.

Got a probullet 306, w/ prolite pisons, bought windage tray. they shipp it to your door, and the motor is on a pallet, driver has a pallet jack. the shortblock looked beautiful, I'll post a pic later. the only thing I had was oilpump, oilpump pickup, oil pan problems, std vol, pump fits fine, HV a little close on clearances, had to bend tab on pickup for stock pan because of main stud girdle, stock pan won't fit, must buy pre'93 oilpan, moroso t-style pan won't fit, due to their type of pickup. I went with the canton road race pan, bent the tab on their pickup, went with melling HV pump, everything fits fine now, had to grind a part of the canton pickup due to clearance.

the problems were time consuming but nothing but a speedbump.
hope my follies will save you a lot of time shipping and returning oil pans.

I love my D&D

they will give you better tturnaround, use better rings and it comes with a girdle!

the DSS charged 299 for a girdle

my friend got a DSS bullit 306 for his 85 gt and we put it together in a weekend pretty easily with no major problems, it runs good with no problems. he's gettin it dynoed hopefully this week since we have extra time, its spring break (no school!).

Ive seen a few posts with ppl having problems with DSS shortblocks. A buddy of mine uses them all the time for his customers and has had zero problems. He swears by them.
