Hello to all again. Thanks for all the good responses last time. Working on getting some pics of my yellow 04 GT 5sp. Can someone tell me what the heck the designation of 4.6L 2v, 3v, 4v? Is this 2 valve, etc.? I see it all over when looking for parts and mods.

Also, I'm being paranoid with my "new" used GT. Still working on why the master cylinder is leaking slightly, but have also noticed a metallic rattle coming from outside the car during accerleration, mostly happens at mid RPM's, and haven't noticed it at idle. Still trying to pinpoint under car or under hood. I've had a similar sound in other cars, including my 89 Porsche 944...which has 150k miles on it. Don't want my newer Stang sounding like a POS Porsche. Maybe loose exhaust, heat shields, etc?!?!?

Thanks! You guys are awesome!

Your '04 GT has 2 valves per cylinder. One exhaust, one intake, actuated by an overhead cam in each cylinder head along with a timing chain.

Expand on this idea for 3v, 4v, etc setups.

Makes sense, that's what I figured. It just started confusing me when I started seeing various years with a 3v or 4v that contradicted what I thought I knew which obviously what I thought I knew isn't what I think I should be thinking.

I'm with him. That sounds a lot like detonation...which is bad. Try putting in a tank of premium fuel and see if it goes away. If it does, then you need to have that looked at, or a tune done for your car.

Could be since you said you got it used it has a tune on it and it could be REAL aggresive. It could be a rattle, IE loose exhaust hanger, or something to check that get car in air and shake it and see if anything hits. Might be a bend dust shield on the brakes seen those make all kinds of noise.

If it were a ping...which I've seen alot of threads on here about....would it normally ping while in neutral with the hood up, so I can actually get my ear closer to it? I only notice it when I'm driving, especially when I drive next to something where the sound bounces back, example...a concrete barrier, houses, etc. I'll crawl under the car and check for loose things too.

Not sure if its been tuned or not. No mods from what I can tell except the KN I put in, but it was rattling before that.

Detonation mostly occurs under load, not in neutral.

EDIT: check out this link for more info.

Thats the case for me too. For example if you are going up a steep hill in 5th bogging it down it would tend to ping. Sometimes it will happen at high RPMs. I used to get that with my 01.

Ok, revelation. I rev'd the car in neutral. It still rattles right at about 3500 rpm. Would this still be a "ping" or more likely to be something rattling??? Its hard being a new stang owner, when you have nothing to compare it to. Anyone notice their parking brake handle on a 5spd tends to push towards the left, and rub against the console more than stay in the middle? Am I being too picky...or do I have alot of sh#@ wrong with my car?!?!?

I would get someone to rev it while you get underneath it (while being safe and supporting it on jackstands) to see if you can hear where the noise is coming from.
