another tie rod question

My 65 fastback was originally a 6 cylinder setup. I bought V8 spindles from a salvage yard in north florida. I do not know if they were removed from a manual or power steering setup. I bought 2 V8 outer tie rod ends for manual steering. The passenger side fits, the driver side tie rod is loose in the tapered spindle hole. Is there a different tie rod size if the original donor car was a power steering setup?

The size and taper for 65-66 are the same for all V8 Mustang applications. Its possible that one of your spindles is from 67+. What are the numbers cast into the spindles.

its difficult to see the part numbers.
The taper is from .55" to .475" plus or minus
your right, the tie rod tapered end seems to be the same no matter if the steering was maual or powered.

I just did full suspension on my 66 and i ran into a similar problem. The tie rods that go into the center link are smaller around then the ones that go into the spindle. You might have possibly got a inner tie rod end instead of an outter. I didnt take note on which ones were which so i had to figure all that out while replacing the inners and outters

C60A-108 is a 67-69 V8 spindle. It has a larger outer tie rod mount hole then 66. The 66 spindle number is C5OA-108. This is not a real big problem unless you have one of each. They have slightly different steering geometry.

To tell the difference quickly, compare the flange part of the spindle (the part that the backing plate mounts to). The 66 type has a mainly rectangular shape with straight sides. The 67 type has an hour glass shape. If you have mixed types, replace the 67 with a 66 type. Good luck.

doesnt the c6 designate 1966? I had the exact same problem, bought baer trackers for my 65 coupe and the drivers side tie rod was loose and the passnegers side was too tight. Turned out they were from a 65 falcon.

On my 66 the tie rod that goes into the center link is bigger around then the one that goes into the spindle. I got the 2 mixed up and thought I had something seriously wrong, but then I just switched them and realized the size difference and got it right. They should fit snugly in the whole. If you have an inner tie rod trying to put it into the spindle it will be too big, and if you have an outter tie rob trying to put it into the center link then it will be too lose and rattle around.

will a 67 spindle work on a 65 model year? The other side, passenger, is to worn to confirm if I have a mix between the 2 model year types.

I thought that falcon spindles and mustang spindels were the same for my model year, therefore the tie rod ends would be the same. This is really a perplexing problem.

Where can I go to cross reference the Ford part numbers?

66stangfastback, I don't have inner tie rod ends as I am doing a randals rack install. His kit uses late model tie rod ends which I have and they fit his rack setup. Its just the connection with the traditional spindals that is killing me.

well if this is true than you are correct. The passenger side backing plate is square. The driver's side is curvy or hour glass shaped. Is there any otherway to verify your analysis? thanks

The C6 designates the year of design, not necessarily the year of application.

From what you said above, doesn't it seem obvious that you have two different spindle types? Get another of the passenger side types. Enough said.
