Well sunday i seem to have busted my T45 up. I had the car towed home yesterday and pulled the tranny last night. I was tired from getting the POS out of the car so once it was on the ground I called it quits, so i'm unsure of the damage right now.

What are the best routes to go besides swapping in a t56. I am looking for rebulid or replace options.

How hard is it to rebuild it, if it is possible. And is there a place that has done alot fo these. I am in Ohio and I am willing to ship it out but obviously that just adds cost to getting this thing moving again. I know there are alot of people out there that has gone through this just wanted to get some feeback on what you did and what options there are for me.

Thanks

I had a rebuilt done years ago while under warranty, so not sure that cost. I did then trash the tranny 8 months ago, and I decided to just replace the t45 with a new t45. I bought the tranny from D&D Performance. Not sure if the cheapest (was $999), The T56 route was just too expensive for me so I bailed on that idea. D&D does have a T56 Kit for our cars, since you will a different drive shaft and the braces that hold the tranny. See their WEB PAGE. Their service is excellent. I got the tranny shipped to me in 3-4days.

If you don't want to shell out the cash for a T56 [and I don't blame you one bit], I would say your cheapest option would be to, obviously, rebuild the original T45. If its too far gone to be saved, and you'll need to buy a new gearbox, I'd just go right on and get a TKO500 or 600, if you have the cash and the power output to neccesitate it. A TKO500 is stronger, and cheaper than a T56, and a little more than a T45 IIRC.

When my T45 decides its made its last shift, I'm planning on ordering up a TKO500 definetly

Count me in for another cobra owner with a messed up trans. My ford racing king cobra clutch grenaded on me today. I only had 6k miles on the thing. This is going to be the third king cobra clutch that I have personally seen come apart after very few miles on a 96-98 cobra. All of these cars were just bolt on cars with no power adders.
My T45 has also seen better days, with 69k miles on it third gear is a pain to get under wot. It either goes in or grinds and blocks me. The synchro and possibly the shift fork have to be messed up. I am tired of this POS so its either the new TKO or T56. I run the old version TKO in my 88 and love the thing. But I am hoping I can swing$$$ the viper T56 upgrade. I want that .50 overdrive to tame the 4.30s outback.

what is a Tremek tko transmission that would work on a nonsupercharged 99 cobra? even stock power is too much for the t45, I mean there must be a 5 speed tranny that will take all the abuse you throw at it and just laugh at you Lets settle this trans crap once and for all, because us cobra guys/gals are tired of the transmission comeing between us and the finish line. I have always felt that cobras could be alot faster if you could beat the crap outa the tranny, because these cars need to be driven like you stole em to go fast!

Ok. I have gotten the lowdown on the tranny situation. tremec does make a 5 speed that will handle the abuse. The TKO500 is a 10 spline transmission based on a 3550 and is rated at 500 LBS of TQ. The same transmission is available in a 26 spline version that is the exact same transmission internally that is rated for 600 LBS of TQ. They sell them with out a bellhousing so you will have to buy one of those too. This transmission is a better fit for our cars gearing wise and size wise than a T56. Even a viper spec t56 will not take the abouse that a TKO600 will. They are on back order right now so it will be a few weeks before they are available for a new order. Total cost on a TKO500 is about 1600 plus 250 for a bell housing. TKO600 is 1700 plus 250 for a bell housing and you will need a new GM clutch disk for the 26 spline input shaft.

SO there it is the fix.

My trans is on order and will be here in about three weeks. Untill then the car remains on jack stands wanting to be driven.

I ordered mine through a local(columbus, OH) Tremec dealer. You should be able to do the same. But for those who would prefer an internet company here ya go.

Yeah, I found that www.mustangsunlimited.com has the complete kit (bell housing, tranny fluid) for $1995 for the tko500 and $2025 for the tko600.
