Anti-Bling

I've never been one for blinging out my vehicles, and now I would like to make some anti-bling changes to my mustang. My car has very little chrome on it, but I would like to darken what little is there. I thought of just replacing the emblems with painted black pieces, but I don't think that they would look right on my mineral grey 'stang. Also a painted black running horse emblem on the grill would make it blend in a little too much. So, what I'm looking for is black chrome pieces to replace all of the chrome emblems. I'm looking for the running horse on the grill, the GT emblems on the sides, and the GT emblem on the trunk lid. I searched for black chrome running horse emblems, and the only thing that I could find was this article showing the new black chrome emblems for the 2010 Mustang. These are really sweet with a more agressive looking running horse with more detail. I just wish that they were already available, and that they would fit on a '05 stang.

I would also like to replace the brushed aluminum dash pieces with the grey fishscale pieces.

I'm undecided on the chrome trim around the guages and heater vents. Are these available in another color?

Of course, I'll also have to change the wheels from polished to something else. I'm thinking anthrecite bullit rims to keep the retro look.

Hmm...did find these emblems kinda' cool. For $165 they oughtta' be.......

The ultimate in anti-bling would probably be the Bullitt grill. Then you could debadge the sides and replace the rear emblem with a black one from silverhorse racing. If you do debadge the sides, there will be two little holes left where the badge used to be.

Yeah, I'm still undecided about what direction I want to go as far as appearance modifications......origionally I was thinking of going with the Elenor look with a Cervinis C-500 kit. I also like the GT500 look too. But, for now I'm going to put most of my attention (and money) toward performance mods. I'd much rather have a sleeper with a stock looking GT than a GT500 look alike that can't back it up The chrome just bugs me, and should be easily remedied without blowing my budget for go fast goodies

Sleeper? That sounds like my car. My wife said I could spend $'s for performance as long as I didn't also spend a fortune on bling, too, so it's performance only...

Looks good

That's what I'm talkin' about. I'm trying to hold off on doing too many little things, and trying to plan everything around "The Big One". I'm researching options for a supercharger or turbo set up. So far the twin screw offerings from Edelbrock, TechCo, and Rousch have my interest. The big water to air intercoolers and improved flow paths make for a cooler air charge and less chance of detonation, which should allow one to push the ~500HP limit of stock internals with less chance of catastrophic failure

I have thought about having the stock GT emblems powder coated, since my car is black I would probably go will flat black powder coat. I just bought a bullit grill to take care of the front. I'm going for a blacked out look but want some contrast.

I shaved all the chrome off mine when I did my paint job... I havent seen any black chrome pieces out there.

Something to try for alot cheaper money, my paint and body guy has been experimenting with "tinting" chrome parts. He is doing it on my gt emblem on my trunk. Same as you would tint out tail lights, he is doing it on chrome parts, it looks badass i have seen a few he has done, Only tried black right now but he is going to try other colors. it gives it that "black chrome look...I want to find a emblem to try blue on before i go ripping mine off...But it shines like chrome but insead of a mirror finish it looks like a mirror behind a black lens.

spending time and money on small accessories is just as bad as spending time and money on blinging them out. the ultimate anti bling is stock.

Couldnt you just take off you "chrome" pieces drop them off at a powder coating shop and have them done ..???

It is likely that I am just blind but I can't find the black, rear (fake gas door) emblems on the Silver Horse site. Do they not have them anymore?

Oh ok I did see those but I didn't look at them well enough. I thought they were for the actual fuel door. So I guess they don't have one that looks like the one that comes on the cars but is black instead huh? I will have to keep looking Thanks!

I made my own black fake gas door, I just masked out the GT in the center and painted it flat black. I masked out the back of the car so I didn't get any overspray on it and roughed up the surface of the chrome and used spraypaint. Haven't had a problem with the paint not sticking. I never liked the chrome on the fake gas door either and could never find an aftermarket black one. It came out good, I don't see any reason you couldn't use gloss black instead of flat black if you wanted it to be shiny.

Well, it looks like I have 3 options:

I had thought about that spray on tint also. This would be by far the easiest solution, but I'd be worried about how it would hold up. I had a friend tint his tail lights with it, and before long it started flaking off. Might have been the application and prep (or lack therof) though

Then there is black chrome paint. This stuff:

looks pretty decent, and should hold up well, especially if the clear coat is used. It is kinda pricey, and prep would be the key to a nice long lasting finish. I would have to invest in an air brush system also, since I don't have one. It might be worth the time, expense, and effort though, just to get the experience doing air brush work. It might turn into a cool hobby/side job

The third option would be getting it plated black chrome. The hard part with this is finding a place that does black chrome AND that does piece work (many plating places only do large manufacturing orders), and of course the cost.

I do like the "bare naked" look as well. I may go that route when and if I start really changing the cars' look. (different front clip, grille, spoiler, etc) You car looks really sweet....the look really sets it apart.

The key for me is subtle changes that personalize it the way I want it and make it different. Besides that I've never liked chrome, I think that it stands out too much on the dark background. Black chrome would take it down a notch, and be just right for me. I think the reason why the chrome around the guages and heat vents doesn't bother me is that it actually reflects the black from the dash, so it kinda' has a black chrome look to it.

Spending time and money for me is the whole point, and what makes it fun (well the time anyway)

On my black car I sprayed the faux gas cap and the grill pony with Semi-Matte black. Gloss black seemed even more "plastic-y" than the chrome and Flat black seemed gray.

For my new car I bought a thin plastic pony overlay from a seller on eBaY ($9.95) and sprayed it Semi-Matte black. It sticks on with 3M tape. I just used 30% of the sticky surface, so it'll come off easily enough.

Frank, I'm likin'the 'vert. I really wanna do something with my emblems, if the "GT" was a stick-on I would just remove it, thats why I wanna have them powercoated flat black.
