Any benefit of removing smog equipment?

I am going to be doing an intake & head swap, and installing an off road H-pipe. I thought while I was in there I would remove the smog equipment. I am looking for advice from people who have done this, and wether it is worth it or not. Also what to expect as far as problems, trouble codes, etc...

If your getting an o/r h pipe, your smog pump will be useless. The best thing it will do is clear your engine bay of clutter and make it easier to work on

I took mine out in December and havent had any problems yet. It will REALLY clean up the passenger side header area.

What all smog equipment do you want to delete?

Air pump: As said before, cleans up engine comparment, one less accesory for the belt to have to turn. Having the smog pump hooked up with a o/r H pipe is an oxy-moron. Your going to need to plug the holes at the back of the head or your going to have one annoying exaust leak.

EGR: Codes might come on unless you do a delete kit. EGR is suposed to turn off at low vaccume, so no power gains but if can keep your intake cooler and cleaner since exaust won't be running through the intake manifold.

Charchoal Cannister: It doesn't weight much, and keeps the fuel smells out of the area.

If your doing all that stuff H/I do the cam to. Take it off (smog crap) makes the engine bay look much better.

Yes you can. The EGR stuff is completely seperate from the smog pump and air tube. The smog pump can be removed and you can reroute the belt, you will need to buy a shorter belt. I did this awhile ago when I got an offroad x-pipe. I'm just now plugging the back of the heads where the air tube goes in. I did not have an air tube running to the x-pipe, but simply had it sitting in the engine bay not connected to anything. The EGR comes through the lower intake I'm pretty sure, and has nothing to do with the smog pump. I blocked off the EGR with a different lower intake gasket just to keep the throttle body cooler. We'll see if it throws any codes. Hope this helps!

Thank you. How did I cap off the "inlet tube" on my H-pipe, the one that the hose from the air pump would go to?

3 ways really: weld it up, crimp it/smash it flat, or slide a bolt in there or something and fill it with jb weld. I did the jb weld technique with a bolt and although its ghetto, it was free and doesnt leak to this day.

The crossover tube has to come off to get the heads off anyway. Once it's removed you can see what size bolt you'll need to simply block off the threaded holes. Or, you can cut the fittings off the end of the crossover tube, flip them over so the flat side blocks the opening in the head, and bolt them right back on. Once you get the crossover tube off you'll see what we're talking about. The egr valve doesn't admit exhaust to the intake at w.o.t. so there's no benefit to removing it other than reducing clutter. Also, the egr actually cools the combustion chamber allowing more timing to be run by the computer. So if you remove it or block it off, some people find they have ping/detonation issues at part throttle. While this isn't a problem for all, if you decided to remove/disable the egr valve, potential problems can be avoided by turning off the egr function in your computer using a chip.

Well if your ever worried about passing inspection in the future you could just run a shorter belt and bypass the equipment .
Thats what I did

I also actually felt an improvment as well The car does rev a lot nicer, kinda like when you install pulleys, I think you get the same kinda power gain if you just "miss one" off,

I still have my AC and Power steering hooked up,
If you want the Part Number for the belt let me know as I only did this to mine a few weekends ago when my smog pump locked up,

So the decition was buy a new smop pump,
Or buy a shorter belt,
