Any issues with reprogramming the computer?

I am going to put the JLT II True CAI with the SCT XCalibrator 2 on my 06 GT (automatic). My questions is that what long term effects (if any) will this have on my car from running a custom tune? By doing changes to shift points and such, will that have any negative effects on the engine or trans? Once you change to a performance tune can you run it for ever or should you only run it when you want it? Want it hmmmmm.... maybe need it is a better statement.

The more technical the responses are the better.

I just installed a custom tune from Paul's High Performance using an SCT XCalibratro 2. It went in just fine by following the prompts on the little screen. I also have a CAI and underdrives (that's all). And I have an auto. The tune did wonders. Great throttle response, very noticeable power increase (don't know how much), very nice shifting. In city driving, shifts exactly like stock, but on WOT, very firm shifts, rubber chirps on 1-2 and I think on 2-3. Never got that before. So far gas mileage is not affected, maybe actually a little better. I'm tuned for 87 octane.

As for long term, my '96 had a chip that did many of these same things and I had it in there for about six years. No problems with the transmission or anything else. My son-in-law has the car now and it is still running like a champ. I think you are going to be happy with the combo you bought. But, I predict that initially, your gas mileage is going down while you put the car through its paces. I did that too. But driving normally, you'll get stock gas mileage.

I have the C&L intake and the Diablosport Predator.
The long term effects are terrible.
An urge to shove your right foot all the way down to the carpet.
A drivers license whose points go down faster than your fuel gauge, and a throaty roar coming from the intake at anything over 3000rpm.

Thump rrr Thanks a lot for the warning. I think I have just enough time to cancel my order. ha ha That is a good side effect if I do say! Pretty much the results that I am wanting. However I do not have to worry as much about the DL problem. I am really looking forward to those terrible effects that you have been having!!

OK, just a few more thoughts from my experience. If your tune will be set up for running on premium gas, you want to make sure you get good quality gas. I've had good luck with Chevron. Also, you want to make sure you maintain your car religiously. Check the manual for the severe service schedule and make sure you do everything they specify and more. I've also had good luck with Motorcraft maintenance parts and synthetic oil. Yes, the stuff is a little more expensive, but you're pushing your car a little more than stock and in my opinion it doesn't pay, in the long run, to skimp on maintenance.

The only concern with these bolt-on power mods is as thump_rr says, you will be trying out the new performance a lot and that may cause problems, but it's not likely they be from the CAI or tuner.

One more thing, sorry to blab on, but don't forget tire maintenance. If you want to connect that new performance to the road, you need to take care of those tires as well.

NorthwerGT... that is good info!! FYI I am using Royal Purple for oil. I have always used Mobil 1 but though I would try out Royal Purple. Other that the octane what is the difference in the Levels of gas? Or perhaps I should ask what advantages and benifets do you get from using the higher octane? Yeah I am with you on the tire gig.

I agree and you can always put the factory tune back in. Yea the sound of he C&L over 3 grand roars and the throtle response is defenetly improved, cant wait to get the BBK throtle body and a tune You are so right with the tires, 26K the perellies just light up and slide in 1st and 2nd. I can shift to 2nd at 20MPH and just light the tires. Looking to get 18's and some nitto 555's. Contrary to popular belief the 3V motors build some nice touqe down low.

If you get the C&L and do more mods you still need to find a good dyno shop that can adjust the A/F, I know mine needs it, or I need o do it for just peace of mind. When I put the Bassani X on I would get a CEL every 300 miles or so and would reset it with the preditor. Now that it is cold outside the CEL has not come on in 3 months. Never tried the 93 octain tune, just dont want to pay for the gas.

My '96 was set up with more advance and had to run on high-test. It got a few more horses, but I had to grit my teeth when I filled it up. I suppose this SCT Xcalibrator could be retuned by Paul's High Performance for 93 octane and would get more power, but as I said, I'm not crazy about paying that extra money. The car performs great right now, so I'm happy.
