anybody painted their valve covers

sucks that our valve covers are plastic. but instead of buying alum new covers, i think i'll try to paint these with alum paint. Anybody painted their's and have any tips?

Hey,

I heard too many negative things from painting them...I have seen it done..but was leary for long term durability....

I bought the aluminum ones, had them stripped, and then re-powdercoated blue...cost a little bit...but that was 7 years ago...and still in perfect shape!

I painted the stock ones along time ago. They lookd like the day I painted them right up untill I took them off and threw them out.

There should be no reason you can't. Just prep them right and use a good adhesion(sp) promoter to make the paint stick.

damn those look good. what type of paint did you use? high temp? and did you use a clear coat? (ive heard the clear yellows with time because of the heat)

I used high temp engine paint and clear coat.

When i did the Bullitt intake swap,i picked up some driverside oil fill covers,and painted them black with engine enamel.And they are still holding out pretty darn good.

damn, i think im going to have a project on my hands here soon. is it easy to take the covers off?

Thats funny, thats the exact same thing i'm doing and the reason i decided to paint them. I got my bullitt intake and bullitt valve covers waiting to install. I REALLY like ur painted intake. That looks very sharp in black. I was thinking about doing my bullitt intake/valve covers in ford blue, but then decided i wanted the cast alum look. So i'm going to clean up the intake with some etching alum cleaner and paint the valve covers with some high temp alum to match.

If u dont mind, i might hit u up on PM if i get stuck and need some help on the swap.

You can use standard body paint on certain engine parts (valve covers included).

The valve covers are a pita to remove..... fwiw.

Alright what covers are those I looked at my car with the bullet intake and the pas. side file with the blower tube going right over it.... Are those bullet covers or are they from a f150? Thanks, looks like a project for me next winter

Thanks bro.Reason i painted my intake was because the guy before me already painted it black(but it was flat looking),originally i was going to polish it,then got 3/4 done on sanding the intake down,and decided to go black again cause there is so many little areas i would've never gotten too if i was going to polish it.and that would've bugged the hell out of me,then to take care of it is another issue.LOL!
So yeah,after i sanded the whole intake smooth with no rough casting/natural casting left,i laid down 3 cans of black engine enamel on the intake,and i was pleased.
Plus it goes well by accenting the silver.
And no prob's,pm me anytime if you need help.It's really an easy swap.

If you go to any local scrap yard,you should be able to find a set off any mid to late 90's Lincolns,Crown Vics,and Mercury Marquies with the 4.6 2V.Most that i saw have the driver side oil fill cam covers.Just make sure to count the bolt pattern to make sure,which should be 11 bolts for both sides.
I know our local scrap yards had tones when i got my set last fall (2007).
If any of you are looking for a set,and can't find them,send me a pm,and i will be willing to go get some if they are still there.Pay for the cost of the covers,and shipping,and your good to go.

They are not easy,it's very tight,especially the driverside.
I was able to do mine while i did the Bullitt intake swap.Without the intake,i was able to curl the cam covers upwards,while pulling them to the front of the engine.
