OK...

In a couple of weeks (hopefully)looks like I will be pulling the engine and trans...

My thoughts were to do the rear end at the same time...

Anyone ever done it?

I am referring to total disassebly, sandblast, paint, rebuild, new bearings, new gears??

Can someone do it themselves? any special tools?

better left to someone else?

My dad did mine, only thing I can really remember is that he scribe a mark on the gears. I asked him about it and he told me it was important to get the gears back the same way as before because of the surface wear.

bearing manufactures have extremely tight tolerances so if you keep all shims the same it should be just a simple bearing swap. the caps on the side bearing races are just like main caps on an engine put em back in the same spot. pulling the inner pinion bearing and side bearings off the carrier does need special tools or a really good hand with a torch.
