I am looking to do an H/C/I install soon and I am reading up on it now. On the Cam install it says you need to drop the oil pan to get the Timing Chain Cover off.....well to drop the oil pan you need to support the tranny, according to the book (Chiltons). Well this is going to be going on in my garage at home, with limited tools, and a lift or a tranny support isnt on the list off tools..... Is there anyone who has done a cam intsall and left the pan on?

Definitely don't have to drop the oil pan to get the timing cover off. It's not that bad, as long as you remember where all the bolts go. Replace the timing chain if you have more than 50K on the car.

make sure you cut the oil pan gasket flush with the back of the timing cover. If you don't, you could rip the oil pan gasket too far back, and you won't be able to slide new ones in.

Like they said before, you dont need to take the oil pan off. We left mine on when we did my H/C swap but we stuck a rag over the opening so no gasket scrapings or little pieces would fall down into it while working.
