Anyone else confuse 3rd with 1st?

I find myself doing this a lot lately for some reason, twice in the last two days. I would shift into 3rd when I'm supposed to be in 1st gear (like when accelerating from a standstill). A couple friends did that too when they drove my car--like they would put it in 3rd gear instead of 1st when the light turned green. Of course, with all that torque the car goes anyway.

My questions are: is this bad for the transmission? What kind of damage can this do? Is this hard on the clutch? Am I just being retarded??

I just hope I'm not f***ing anything up.

Put a Tri-Ax in that car! :nice:

Hell yeah, you know for sure where the hell that shifter is. Just installed mine and it is so tight. I'm gonna get a bigger right bicep from trying to move that darn shifter to 1st! It'll now match my big right forearm :D

Just make sure you go as far left as you can then push
up. That is not hard and when shifting to third make sure you
don't push it straight up only, go to the right a bit....I do
not get the problem. After market short throw shifters with
shift stops are sweet and make shifting funner and easier
if you find that task difficult.

You guys kill me. :)

Yeah, I guess I just have to be more aware of what I'm doing. I can't imagine the clutch liking it every time that happens. I know for sure that it slips more than it should because I have to gas it enough to keep the revs up so that it doesn't stall. :nonono: A motorhead friend of mine says that it could possibly eat up 3rd gear because that gear wasn't made to handle all that torque.

I've never used an aftermarket shifter so I have no idea what I'm missing. Is the Tri-Ax that awesome? I'd love to try one.

Yes.

It's spring-loaded so you have to push over to get in 1st or 5th, but when you jam up from 2nd to 3rd it pops into place. It has stops so you can really hammer it home in quick shifts. It was the first mod I did and it should be for everyone.

Dammnnn you get confused. Here is any idea get in a car with a T56 drive it around alittle and get back in your stang. When you get back in your stang you will not confuse gears ever again.

My Formula i would always put it in 3rd gear thinking it was 1st damn gears were to close.

Tri-ax or Pro 5.0 fer sher. That will get rid of a mis-shift.
GoBaby...I know what you mean abot a 6 speed. My dad has a C5 and we put a short-throw in it. I can never tell what the hell gear I'm in until I let off the clutch. If it stalls from 2nd I know I went to 5th. :bang:

Either shifter, Tri Ax or the Pro 5.0 is a good one :nice:. My only gripe about the Tri Ax is that you loose a ton of dampaning material when you replace the stock shifter. You feel every notch, shake, and wiggle that happens in the tranny, and there is a lot more road noise that you will be able to hear. Those are my only two complaints about the shifter. Other than that, it is a great mod for our cars. When I first got my '03. I had it in 3rd rather than 1st twice on the way back from the dealer :bang:. I let my granddad drive it, he used to drag race a ton, and he did the same thing. These gears are very close together except for 5th. It feels like I am going into the passenger side to shift into 5th lol.

Yeah, it can be loud. With windows up and NOTHING going in your car you hear everything. Turn the radio on and most of it goes away :)

All in all, it was a great investment. Only thing I don't like is when I try to shift slowly as when driving so, it is so hard to shift. Solution: I shift hard all the time even when going slow ;) People think I'm crazy.

When i bought my car the spring that pushed it to center on the 1st gear side wasnt working. Once when i was racing on to the freeway I shifted into 1st instead of 3 at the top of 2nd. I only let the cluch out for a split second, but that was still enough to trail the car sideways a little. I take a little more time shifting into 3rd now

You can get the handle anywhere you can buy the shifter(I know Texas Mustang Parts as them in stock). I'm getting a tri-ax handle for my pro 5.0 here soon so it'll be a little more comfy and closer to me. I love my pro 5.0 (and I really like the steeda knob!)
