Anyone ever use oil filter magnets?

I was reading through a parts catalog for my Cherokee and came accross some oil filter magnets that are supposed to trap metal fragments and shavings from causing wear in your motor and blah blah blah....anyone ever use these on a 'stang? I've heard of using a filter screen on a new motor but never anything about magnets.

yeah, Ive used them. I think they work great. I use the magnet that is right by my oil drain plug. I think it could help alot when first breaking in your engine.

I would defineltly recommend it, cuz it is cheap prevention.

Are you talking about the magnets that wrap around the filter?

I changed the oil on my Dads 2002 Suburban, and there is a magnet on the end of the oil pan drain plug bolt. Had some dust on it, but no major chunks.

Yea i meant the ones that go around it like the Filter Mag...that's actually the same one i was looking at. The "Race" version is a little over 100 bucks each....i'd say if you build a 5k motor, a little 100 dollar item that could save some life on the motor is well worth it.

What about thous round donuts shaped magnets moroso makes that go inside you motor/oil pan to catch stuff?

i am not familiar with the product, but i wonder this:
ok, the thing catches some metal - how do you get to the magnet to clean it?
it sounds like the 'donuts' that are inside some pumpkin covers.

I guess you don't clean them, maybe its for "just in case".

One thing I have heard to do is just rip say a magnet off an old speaker (go to the junkyard or something and grab one), because those things are fairly strong, and just stick it on the OUTSIDE of your oil pan near the drain plug. Then when you go to drain the oil, take the magnet off and drain the oil so the shavings or what ever that are on the inside of the pan where the magnet was comes out with the oil as it drains through the hole.

I haven't tried it myself but I am probably going to with my new engine

I just use magnetic drain plugs in my 5.0.

Haven't picked one up yet for the 4.6 though.

if one wants a small magnet, i would recommend neodynium magnets. they hold up very well under heat, which other general purpose magnets might not do.

they are fairly cheap. if you stick one to something, it is harder to remove than breaking a pencil (my crude analogy). if two are stuck together, it takes some strong fingers to pull them straight apart. (i do have them and use them).

HISSIN- The ones that I used were out of a computer. Just some simple ol' magnets. I have never seen those that wrap around the filter but still.... 100 bucks vs. engine rebuild... The 100 bucks is a lot cheaper.

Crunchie, i see your point. here is my perspective: if something lets go in the motor, i am not figuring a magnet is gonna save the day. remember, if the filter clogs, the bypass kicks in and no oil goes through the filter anyhow.

that said i am sure these products are wonderful - they simply are out of my price range. i have read favorable things about them on boards (unbiased, non-propoganda opinions).

i think, as you are saying, it comes down to a peace of mind thing. as i said, i use some neo's myself. i figure it cant hurt, right.
