Anyone go to DEQ without cats?

Well its that time for me to get my tags renewed, and run the car through DEQ. I currently am running an offroad x-pipe. Should I be safe and swap it out to the stock h-pipe befire I take it in. Or do you think I can get away with it if I can keep the car quite, if thats possible.

You and I are in the same boat! I'm taking mine off before I go (in about a week). I'm sure it's going to fail with no cats.

On your 2003 if you're not showing an MIL you may very well pass since they just do the ECU check. If you've got the O2 simulators on there the ECU just assumes that everything is fine, the only way they'd get you is if they did a visual check to make sure they are there from what I understand.

I don't know about SonicBSnake, but I don't have MIL eliminators. My chip is programmed to ignore the sensors; thus, no "check" engine light. If they checked the ECU only, what will the ECU tell them? Do you suppose I can slide by?

in that case I would think it would show up in there scan, but again I'm working primarily off of 2nd hand info and assumption.

My car also does not have the MIL eliminators. My chip is controlling that, so no check engine light comes on.

I guess it would just be safer to go in with the cats on in case they decide to look under my car. Isnt it a hefty fine if you get caught driving without them?

test it w/o the cats... how you are now... I passed w/ my O/R H, pretty clean motor though... I would think you'd pass, but if you don't then you have 7 days... plenty of time to swap on your catted X pipe

Im not too worry if I pass or not the first time, because like you said I could just swap the x-pipe out and go back in.

the thing Im afraid of is getting fined for not having the cats on in the first place, isnt there some kind of law about this

yes there are laws about removal of cats.

Brian, you're talking washington aren't you? I heard that Noong was able to get his car to pass w/o cats as well, but I'm not sure if oregon and washington have the same standard.

Also in Washington with newer cars 2000 on up you are not a required emission test for the first six years.

the 5.0's can get away with a lot. Blood enterprises told me stories about no cats or smog pump with GT-40 heads and an E or B cam passing the test with a dyno tune.

yeah I also hear that there is a fine for no cats, but there are a lot of people that hate their job and don't care, I wouldn't worry about everybody there being anal, besides a lot of those people wouldn't know what it looks like.

I used Guaranteed to Pass, sold at sucks auto, works very well. you could also run some ethanol, and tune the car for that. the sniffers don't look for alcohol

well, I know that w/ the modern cars, so the 96+ mustangs, they hook thier computer into your car's computer, and it'll tell them if you have cats or not... before the days they were required, you didn't need them either. so, we are supposed to have cats legally if they came w/ them, but they won't do any visual inspection here in WA from what I've seen... now, if you have a 96, and no cats, you're pretty much screwed

Just for good measure, go to a junk yard and get the heat shields off of a couple of cats. Tack weld the heat shields on your pipes if you are nervous about getting a ticket.

Thats how I run, even had cops stop me because of noise, visually inspect me and let me go

The DEQ testing stations could care less if you have cats or not, as long as you pass the test -- they're not going to fine you if you don't have them, just tell you to go install them and come back. The ECU test just checks to make sure you aren't throwing any codes. Take it to autozone and verify -- if you don't have any codes, you'll pass with flying colors.

I just had a very similar conversation a few months ago at the local DEQ .

Or if you fail the first time just go get back in line or go to the other bay and try again I heard that oregon's DEQ is so f%#*k to begin with and when it does work half the time it isn't accurete??? Just what I've heard tho. I live in Wa. and register my car where it don't need to be DEQ'd at. Peace
