I want to swap out the distributor on my Cobra clone to see if I can get rid of a computer code. Any recommendations? I hear Autozone has them but it's a crapshoot if the PIP has actually been replaced.
Anyone have a good resource for a rebuilt/cheap distributor that has a new PIP?

i think i still have my old dizzy from my 302. i had a new pip put in not long before the swap because i was trying to track down a hesitation problem which turned out to be (another) burned spark plug wire from the equal lentgh headers i had before

I kinda have to think that they do replace the PIP. I mean, what else would be rebuilt in the distributor? They take it apart to clean it and all that, I sincerely doubt they just clean the PIP and hope it still works. I bet 90 percent of the distributors brought in are because of the bad PIP in the first place. Its not like the rebuilder doesnt know about it and only we do. They come with lifetime guarantees so Im pretty sure they replace the PIP before it gets shipped back out. Think about it. We pay like 20 dollars for it. They probably buy them by the truckload and pay about two dollars per stator, if that. Ive sold a few in my time at the store and Ive yet to have one come back. I think youll be fine with either an Advance one or one from the zone.
This came up in another thread a while back - I think it was Hissin who mentioned it. When a dizzy is remanufactured, they simply test the PIP for proper function. If it passes, they do not replace it. I remember there was a way to tell if the PIP was replaced, something about the pin holding the dizzy gear was missing. Perhaps Teacher Hissin can pitch in and repeat the lesson. 
What I had gathered from one large supplier is that if the PIP test passes, they reuse it. This is one reason that the dizzies have a lifetime warranty.
When they do replace one, they often will not take the time to align the rollpin hole. They simply punch a new one. So if there's a spare hole, that is an indication that the PIP was replaced at some point during a reman process.

Send me your dizzy and the sensor and I'll rebuild it for you. I just did mine yesterday, I resurfaced the bearing surfaces(housing and shaft), cleaned it up nice and even polished the housing itself. With shipping both ways and the price for the part you'd be at 45 bucks. Alot cheaper than getting a reman'd dizzy and not knowing if they did or didn't replace the pip stator.
