i always drive with my windows down so i never really heard it. slight whine when i let off the gas. i figured it was normal. however, today i had to put the windows up and the whine is very loud when i let off the gas and the car is lowering through the rpm band on its own.

this is while the car is still in gear and i just let off, it doesnt do it when i throw it in neutral. there is no sound while gasing the car and getting on it.

normal for the most part???

that'd be the backlash being a lil bit on the tight side. if it does it while you're in the gas it's the pinion depth.
I have the latter. How serious can it be if I dont have funds to fix it right now? I mean could there be serious drivetrain damage/failure or am I just looking at the annoying whine? Ive had the gears in since November 05 and its gotten slightly worse than it was right after the gears were installed, but has been pretty much the same for the past few months.

thx.

mine is only when letting off, not while accelerating. however, is either one of these situations dangerous? thanks btw!

if its just noise ill leave it, it dont bother me but if it is going to break somthing i need to know so i can go back to the shop that did it.

do you have an aftermarket shifter??? after I put my TriAX in I started to hear a bit more noise...

well you all are hearing the noise because the tolerances are too tight in the gear set. if they are too tight they 'can' snap teeth on the gear set. i've seen this happen only once & it was to my buddies camaro.

you all should be ok, so long as it's not REALLY bad. my car does it too, & there is nothing you can really do about it after the gears have been driven on. on top of that, some gears are just naturally noisey

yea i had the after market shifter before the gears. you are right you can hear more noise but this is directly related to the gears.

oh! you cant change it if they were set too tight once they are driven on? i didnt know that. well i dont mind leaving it if that is what it is but i hope i dont snap the teeth. i hope that it is nothing serious.

im trying to save for a built block i dont need to be replacing the rear.

i guess i will take my mechanic for a ride and see what he says.

well i talker to my guy tuner today. he said hes not sure what is causing the noise. im bringing it in to him on june 13 for a coolent flush and hes going to take a listen.

he was asking if it was going away while the clutch was pushed in. which it does.

he told me to find out what gear oil is recommended for the eaton because he usually uses auburn

he also said i should get the aluminum d/s
